SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,774, dated September 15, 1903. l i l Application filed June 10, 1903- Serial No. 160,804. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD CLIFF, a citizen of the United States,.and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in trucks for electric and other cars; and it consists in the novel features, construction, arrangement, and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The object of the invention is to simplify and render more efficient and durable electric e and other car trucks, and in addition to secure an easy-riding action in the truck and also to aiford a construction in which adequate space is provided for the parts conof a car-truck constructed in accordance with elevation of same.

In'the drawings, 20designates the upper longitudinal beam of the side'frame; 21, the lower tie-bar of said frame; 22, the end bars which "connect one side frame with the other corresponding side frame; 23, theequalizingbars; 24, the axle-boxes, and 25 the usual wheels. The side frames are connected together at their ends by means of the end bars 22 and at their middle portions by means of the transoms 26,between which transoms the bolster 27, of suitable construction, is mounted, the endsofsaidbolster'being secured,
upon springs 28 and at their upper surfaces preferably provided with "surfaces 29 to receive rollerbearings for engagement with the ends of the body-bolster. (Not shown.)
The upper beam 20 of the side frame is preferably a casting or forging and in one integral piece from end" to end, and by preference this beam 20 is formed integrally with the pedestal members 30 31 and rectangular frame 32, the latter, as hereinafter described,
receiving the ends of the transoms 26 and also accommodating the outwardly-pro j ecting portions of the elliptic springs'28. The pedestal members 30 31 extend downwardly and receive on their facing sides suitable guideplates 33 for the axle-boxes 24, and the lower are plain bars, extending from one side to the other of the car-truck, having their end portions 37 turned at right angles, so as to pass into longitudinal line with the beams 20, to
whichthey are secured by bolts, as shown.
The rectangular frame 32 depends from the central portion of the beam 20, and within and against the vertical facing sides of said frame are secured the outer ends of the transoms 26, the latter at their ends being cut away to enter the said frame 32 and to form shoulders 38, adapted to abut against the inner vertical face of the beam 20. The ends of thetransoms 26 rest upon the lower cross-bar of the frame 32, and are thereby very well supported, and the said transoms are secured against the vertical facing sides of said frame 32 by means of an inner rectangular frame 39 and bolts 40, the latter passing horizontally through the sides of the frame 32, the transoms 26, and frame 39. The rectangular frame ,39 is intended to fit tightly within the outline furnished between the ends of the transoms 2 6 and the upper and lower facing, surfaces of the frame 32, and it is my, purpose "toldrive the frame 39 to its position, so that it may effectually secure the ends of the transoms 26 and prevent any loosening of the same.
At this place it may be well to describe the modification shown in Fig. 4, this modification pertaining solely to the frame 32 and consisting in omitting a portion of the lower I prefer, however, to connect the vertical sides of the frame 32 by the integral bar, as shown in Fig. 2, the construction shown in Fig. 2 being of-very durable character. The side frame of the truck thus in its preferred form comprises an upper beam 20, having the integral frame 32 to receive the ends of the transoms and also having the integral pedestal frame members 31, although, as is obvious, the pedestal frame members may be formed separately from the beam 20 if def sired.
of the equalizing-bars 23, there being an equalizing-bar at each side of each side frame, and at the opposite sides of the transverse center of each side frame of the truck springs 41 will be interposed between the upper edges of the equalizing-bars 23 and the lower surfaces of the upper beam 20, these springs 41 being of usual character and confined at their upper ends by caps 42, fitting against the lower surfaces and extending upwardly along the vertical sides of the upper beam 20, while the lower ends of said springs 41 are confined within caps 43, which engage both equalizingbars 23. The equalizing bars 23 extend outwardly beyond the axle-boxes 24 and bear upon caps 44 of springs 45, whose lower ends are held in caps 46, and which caps and springs are suspended from the ends of the upper beam 20 upon bolts 47, the latter extending downwardly at the outer sides of the pedestal frame members for the axle-boxes, it being my purpose that the springs 45 shall be adjacent to the ends of the truck, while the springs 41 are at the opposite sides of the transverse center of the truck, and the object of this arrangement of the springs 41 45 is to prevent the oscillation of the truck and produce an easy-riding truck, this being an especially desirable feature for electric trucks. The invention is not in every instance limited' to the formation of the frames 32 integrally with the upper beam 20 of the side frames; nor is the invention in all. its parts limited to the employment of the two sets of springs 41 45, since except for producing a high-class easy-riding truck the springs 45 would be omitted.

1. I11 a car-truck, the side frames, and the end bars and transoms connecting said side frames, combined with the integral frames 32 to receive the ends of said transoms, and the inner frame 39 set within said frame 32 and aiding in securing said transoms; substantially as set forth.
2. In a car-truck, the side frames, and the end bars and transoms connecting said side frames, combined with the frames 32 integral with the side frames and receiving the ends of said transoms, and means for securing said transoms against the inner facing sides of said frames, said transoms consisting of vertical plates bearing at their-lower edges against said frame 32, and at their upper outer corners being cut away to engage the upperbeam of said side frames; substantially as set forth.
3. In a car-truck, the side frames, and the end bars and transoms connecting said side frames, combined with a frame 32 depending from the upper beam of said. side frames and adapted to receive the ends of said transoms,
and the inner frame 39 adapted to enter said frame 32 and aid in securing the ends of said transoms; substantially as set forth.
4. In a car-truck, the side frames, andthe end bars and transoms connecting said side frames, combined with a frame 32 depending from the upper beam of said side frames and adapted to receive against its inner vertical facing sides the ends of said transoms, the
inner frame 39 for aiding in securing the ends of said transoms, and the bolts passing through the vertical members of said frames 32, 39 and said transoms for securing the whole together; substantially as set forth.
5. In a car-truck, the side frames, and the end bars and transoms connecting said side frames, said side frames comprising the upper beam, lower bar and pedestal members, said upper beam having integral therewith the depending frame 32 to receive the ends of said transoms, combined with the inner frame 39 of rectangular outline to aid in securing said transoms; substantially as set.

In a car-truck, the side frames, and the axle-boxes, combined with the equalizing-bars atopposite sides of each sideframe,the springs intermediate the upper edges of said bars and the upper beam of the side frames, and the springs at the outer sides of the axle-boxes and receiving the outer end of said equalizing-bars; substantially as set forth.
7. In a car-truck, the side frames, and the axle-boxes,combined with the equalizing-bars at the opposite sides of each side frame, the springs intermediate the upper edges of said bars and the upper beam of said side frames, the bolts suspended from the outer ends of said side frames, and the caps and springs mounted on said bolts, the upper caps forsaid springs being engaged by the outer ends of forth.
