REGISTRATION-STAMR Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1907.
Application filed November 23. 1906. Serial No. 344.690.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SornUs J. HALsE, residing in Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of l/Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Registration-Stamps, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanymg drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a stamp with a stub or coupon which may be detached therefrom and retained by the user for identification purposes, while the stamp proper is attached to an ordinary letter to bemailed in the usual manner such as by dropping in the letter box at any ceipt of the ordinary form.
for identification.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the registration stamp as herein claimed, and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in the several views; Figure 1 is a view of a re -istration stamp and coupon before being detached; Fig. 2 is a view of a letter having the registration stamp applied thereto; and, Fig. 3 is a view of the detached re istration coupon.
In these drawings 5 represents the registration stamp proper which preferably contains suitable reading matter indicating its nature, the year of its issue, its value, and a serial number or other mark of identification. This stamp is preferably of a triangular shape so as to be more noticeable when applied to the letter as shown in Fig. 2, and therefore more readily attract the attention of the postmaster to the fact that the letter is to be registered.
The registration stamp is united at one edge with a corresponding coupon 6, there being a line of perforations 7 between them permitting them to be readily separated for use. The coupon is desirably of the same shape as the stamp proper and bears similar reading matter with its proper designation and the same serial number or identification mark.
In use, a person may carry a supply of registration stamps and whenever it is desired to register mail it is only necessary for him to detach the stamp proper from the coupon and apply it to the mail matter and deposit the mail in a letter box or postoflice the same as any other letter. master or clerk is about to cancel the postage stamp he will observe the registration stamp and will register the letter making a note of the serial number or identification mark instead of taking the senders name as usual. When the sender presents the coupon or stub When the post.
at the postoilice its serial number or identification mark will be compared with those of the record and a recei t will be given him for the registered letter 1n the usual way, the letter having in the meantime been forwarded to its destination.
By the use of this invention registered mail may be attended to promptly and without the present annoyance occasioned by the necessity for securing registration receipts from the postoifice before the mail is forwarded to its destination.
The mail can be deposited in the usual mail boX the same as ordinary mail and the coupons may be kept without presenting them for theregistration receipts if desired, and by being pasted on the leaves of record books they may be retained until occasion requires their presentation for the formal receipts, though in most cases there will be no necessity for taking any further action.
