JAMES H. SMALL, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
LABEL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 231,366, dated August 1'7, 1880.
Application filed May 25, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. SMALL, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Labels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of labels which are affixed to packages and other articles to be sent away, and which contain the address of the person to whom the package or other article is to be delivered.
The object of the invention is to provide a ready means for keeping a record of all packages or articles sent, and also to enable the receiver of the package or other article to readily give a receipt for the same.
My invention consists of a book or package of three-part labels, forming a stub, a central or address portion, and an end piece or receiptvouoher, all bound in book form, numbered consecutively, and designed to be printed upon and separated, the central or address portion having its rear side gummed, as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book of my improved labels. Fig. 2 is a reverse view of one of the labels provided with the stub and blank receipt.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in both of the figures.
A represents a number of labels numbered consecutively and provided with suitable lines and words to permit the ready insertion of the address and date. The labels are gummed on their reverse side to render them adhesive.
B represents the stubs formed with the la.- bels, each stub bearing the same number with the adjacent label. The stubs are provided with the same lines and words as the labels, to permit the same address and date being readily written upon the stub that is written on the corresponding label.
(No model.)
0 represents the blank receipts arranged at the outer edge of the labels A, and numbered consecutively, so that the number of each receipt corresponds with the adjacent label and stub. The receipt-blanks (J are provided with the necessary lines and words to receive the signature of the receiver of the package, the date of reception, and the address of the sender, which latter may be printed on the receipt-blanks. The lines of separation between the labels A and the stubs B, and between the various labels and blank receipts O, are punctured or pcrforated,so thateach label can be easily separated from its stub and the other labels. The blank receipt C is, however, firmly enough attached to each label to prevent it from being accidentally detached.
In using my improved label the address is written on the stub and label, and the label detached from the stub and affixed to the package, together with the receipt O, which, however, is not adhesive, so thatit can bedetached from the label by the receiver of the package. The stubs will show a complete record of all packages sent, and the returned receipts will form vouchers for the same.
I am aware that it is not new to print or construct in book form a series of stamps composed of a stub, a stamp portion, and a detachable coupon, and I do not desire to claim, broadly, any such construction; but
I claim as my invention- A book or package ofthree-part labels, forming stub, address, and receipt portions, numbered consecutively and otherwise printed upon, as described, the central or address portion being gummed on its reverse side, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JAS. H. SMALL.
