SQUARE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1907.
Application filed March 27. 1907- Serial No. 364;.766.
T 0 all whom'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUE O. FINNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Breadysville, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Square; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a square, having primarily and essentially for its object to provide a connection between the .two right angled portions thereof, of such peculiar construction, that the two said portions are readily connected together, so as to prevent displacement of either, and to provide a true square; this square is to be manufactured of any suitable material, preferably metal of any kind. One of the said portions may be in the form of a thin blade if desired, but preferably the square is to be manufactured of solid steel, of uniform thickness, and by this peculiar connection the two portions of the square may be readily disconnected, so as to occupy a small amount of space in the mechanics toolchest. The square may be provided with graduations, and the propertions of the square may be of any desired dimensions, suitable for the manufacture of the device. j
This invention comprises further objects and combinations of elements which will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be pointed out by the appended claims.
To obtain a full and correct understanding of the details of construction, combinations of features, elements and advantages, reference is to be had to the hereinafter set forth description and the accompanying drawings in connection therewith, wherein Figure 1 is a-perspective view of the square. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the twofportions of the square, in readiness to be connected together, looking downward thereon. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the square showing the two portions thereof disposed similar to that shown in Fig. 2, looking upward. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line l4 of Fig. 1.
Making renewed reference to the acco1npanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several illustrations, by figures, 1 and 2 designate two portions of the square, the portion 1 having a tapered recess 3, one wall 4 of which is slightly inclined, as shown; the walls of this recess are provided with a groove 5, about its entirety, for the purpose of receiving a supplemental tongue 6, of the main tongue 7, of the portion 2, which tongues 6 and 7 upon one edge thereof, as at S, are slightly tapered to correspond with the wall 4, so as to provide a ready connection of the portions of the square, as will be evident from the drawings.
At the termination of the supplemental tongue upon each edge of the portion 2 is a shoulder 9 to form a solid abutment or bearing against which the portion 1 will contact, when the said portions are connected, thereby obviating all chances of changing the position of the two portions of the square. One of these shoulders extends further, laterally, than the other, as at 10, as clearly shown.
The portion 1 is provided upon the face, opposite the face having the recess 3, with a slight recess 11, while the portion 2 upon the face corresponding to that of the portion 1, is provided with a short tongue 12 to be received. by the recess 11 this construction serves as a reinforcement of strength in every direction.
The main tongue and the tongue 12 form a groove 13 designed to receive a short tongue 14, of the portion 1 formed by the recess 11, as will be clearly seen in the drawings; the two portions of the square are securely fastened together by means of a suitable screw 15, or they may be fastened by any other suitable means, if desired.
The tapering portion of the main tongue, and of the wall of the recess 3 provides a tight connection between the two portions of the square, that is when they are gradually connected together, and this tapering con struction also obviates the danger of strain ing the connection, when the mechanic is in the act of releasing or disconnecting the two portions of the square, for cleaning purposes.
It is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be employed in the construction and embodiment thereof, combinations of features, and elements, without in any way departing from the spirit and scope of the invention covered by the claims thereof; it being understood that whatever variations or modifications are employed must fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
From the foregoing, the essential features,
elements and the operation of the device, to lgular grooved recess While the other portion gether with the simplicity thereof, will be is provided with a main and supplemental clearly apparent, and, when manufactured l tongue to be received by said grooved recess, in accordance with the invention, an ineX- i and means forfasteningtheportions together. 15 pensive market will be easily obtained there- In testimony whereof I have signed rny for. name to this specification in the presence of Having thus fully described the invention, two subscribing Witnesses. what is claimed as new and useful by the pro- I SAMUEL C; FINNEY. tection of Letters Patent, is Witnesses:
