To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL E. STETLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medford, in the county I of Grant, Oklahoma Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Posts;-and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to new and useful improvements in detachable gate posts, and while it is primarily designed to be used in connection with double drive gates, it is of such construction that it may be advantageously used in all cases where the use of a gate post is desirable.
My invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the drawings and set forth inthe specification and claims hereunto appended.
' In the accompanying drawings,-Figur e 1 is a side elevation of my gate post used in connection with a double drive gate, set in position and partly broken away; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lower member of the post, partly broken away; Fig. 3 is a perspectiveview of the upper member of the gate post partly broken away; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the two post members locked together and partly broken away, and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the post partly broken away.
My invention is described as follows:The numeral 1 represents the gate post. Said post is made in two separate and distinct parts, which parts, for the purpose of explanation, I shall term, the upper post member 2 and the lower post member 3. Said upper post member 2 comprises a tube 4, exteriorly threaded at its lower end, and a. head 5 comprising a circular plate 6 having three, four or more radial slots 7, equi-distant apart, in its periphery and an annular interiorly threaded flange 8, formed on its upper face, the purpose of which will be disclosed. Said circular plate 6 is also provided with a central opening 9, across which extendsa rectangular block or web 10 having a vertical guide pin 10 intermediate of its length. Said lower post member 3 comprises a tube 11, exteriorly threaded at its upper end, and a head 12 comprising a circular plate 13, having a number of radial slots 14, in its periphery, equi-distant apart, and an annular interiorly threaded flange 15 formed integral with its under face. Horizontal bearing extensions 16 are secured or formed integral with the outer face of said annular flange 15 in such a manner that their inner sides are flush with the side walls of said slots 14 of said circular plate 13; and pivoted at their inner ends between said bearing extensions 16 are locking members 17 perforated near their outer or free ends. The circular plates 6 and 13 of said heads 5 and 12, respectively, correspond in diameter and in the number of slots cut in their peripheries so that when secured together the adjacent slots in said plates register. The circular plate 13 of said head 12 is also provided with a central vertical perforation ,or opening 18.
In the construction and application of my invention, the annular flange 15 of said head 12 is screwed to the upper threaded end of said tube 11 of said lower post member 3, which member is to be securely embedded in the ground. The lower threaded end of said tube .4 is then screwed in said annular flange 8 of said head 5.
The said vertical guide pin 10 of said plate 6 is then inserted in said perforation 18 of said circular plate 13 and said plate 6 turned until the slots in said plates register. The free ends of said perforated locking members 17 are then swung upward in the slots of said circular plate 13, when key blocks 20, of preferably wedge-shaped form, are driven in the slots of said members. A suitable cap 22 is screwed or otherwise fastened to the upper end of said tube 4. Said cap is for the purpose of ornamentation and to keep water, ice, etc., out of said tube in bad weather.
My invention is of such construction that it is susceptible of various changes without departing from the spirit thereof. It will be observed that the post may be easily and readily separated into its component parts should occasion necessitate.
To remove the upper post member 2 or that part of the post that is above the ground, it is only necessary to take a hammer and drive out the wedges 20, and swing down the outcr ends of the locking members 17 to the ground. This will leave an opening for the passage of a vehicle equal to the total length of both gates.
In the construction and application of my invention I do not confine myself to tubes 4 and 11, as herein shown, as it is evident that they may be of square or any other suiiabhform and may be made from any suitablc material. Said tubes are not necessarily screwed to said heads 5 and 12 but may be cast solid therewith, or attached with screws, bolts or rivets.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the construction and operation of my invention will be clear without a more expanded explanation.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. A gate post consisting of two gate members, one comprising a tube having a head composed of a circular plate having a number of slots in its periphery and an annular intorioriy threaded flange formed on its upper face, screwed to its lower cud, and the other a tube having a head composed of a circular plate having a number of slots in its periphery, an annular iuteriorly threaded flange having slotted locking members pivoted to its outer face, formed on its lower face, screwed to its upper end, and key blocks, adapted to work in the slots of said slotted locking mem hers, substantially as described.
2.. A gate post comprising upper and lower sections, heads attached to the meeting ends of said sections and provided with radial opening slots, perforated locking members pivoted to one of the sections for movement into engagement with the slots and keys designed for insertion through said perforations to fix the members in locking position.
3. A gate post comprising upper and lower sections, heads attached to the meeting ends of the sections and provided with hearing openings, movable locking members attached to'one of the sections for entrance into said openings to couple the sections and means for fixing the locking members in coupling position.
4. In a gate post the combination of a tube; a head comprising a circular plate having slots in its periphery equi-distances apart, a central opening and an annular in teriorly threaded flange on its upper face, screwed to the lower end of said tube; a lower tube, a head, comprising a circular plate having slots in its periphery equi-distances apart, and an annular interiorly threaded flange on its lower face; screwed to the upper end of said lower tube; slotted locking members, pivoted to the outer face of said last mentioned head opposite said slots; key blocks, adapted to work in the slots of said slotted locking members, and a cap, screwed on the upper end of said upper tube, substantially as described.
' 5. In a gate post, the combination of an upper tube, a head screwed on the lower end of said tube; a lower tube and a head screwed on the upper end of said lower tube, with means for removably locking said heads together, substantially as described.
