Description
ORLANDO O. MCQUAII), OF FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
PLUME-BOB Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1907.
Application lecl April 29. 1907. Serial No. 370.985.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORLANDO O. MCQUAID, a citizen ol' the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumb-Bobs, of vwhich the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The object, construction and operation of my improved plumb-bob are herein fully set lorth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a part hereot and in which Figure l is a side elevation ol' my improved plumbbob, as it appears when suspended by the line. Fig. 2 is a bottom view ot same. Fig. 3 is a central, vertical section and shows the plumb-bob standing upon the lloor.
The object of-my improved device is to provide a plumb-bob which is especially well adapted ior millwrights use and which may be dropped or let down l'rom any stated point to the floor or other surface below where it will stand in the proper location and position until said location is marked in the manner hereinafter set lorth.
The construction of my improved plumb-bob is substantially' as follows :-l`he body l preferably has a shape approximating that of a truncated cone and has a vertical hole lorined centrally therethrough for the reception ot a stem 2, which has an enlarged head 3, that terminates at the lower end in a point. Bodyl is provided at its lower end with a plurality of legs 4, 4, 4, each pointed at its lower end, said legs being somewhat longer than head 3. The upper end oi stem 2 is suitably equipped for the reception oi a line 5. Head 3 is preferably separable from the stem 2, so that in case a plumb line is to be established through several floors ot' a building, said head may be removed, and the stem 2 withdrawn from the body l, and dropped through a hole in the floor, the body and point are then replaced the plumb lowered to the floor below until it stands upon the floor. By tapping the top of stem 2 point 3 .will precisely prick or mark the desired point upon said floor and another hole for the reception of stem 2 may be there made; the stem may again be withdrawn from the body, as above stated, and lowered through this hole and the above operation repeated at the next oor until a plumb-line has been established through the several floors oi a building.
The above described use of my plumb-bob is only one of a number of specific uses to which it is well adapted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is.
1. A plumb bob having,r a body provided upon its lower end with a plurality of pointed legs, there being a central vertical hole through said body, a stem passing loosely through said hole, and a removable pointed head upon said stem.
2. A plumb-bob consisting of a body provided upon its bottom or lower face with a plurality of pointed legs, there being a central hole through said body, a removable, Vertcally movable stem, pointed at its lower end seated in said hole and means at the upper end of said stem for attachinga line.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
