To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER E. WIsE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Marking Devices, of which the following is a specification. g

My invention relates to appliances used in connection with the fitting of garments to the person of (the wearers for the purpose of marking the garments horizontally to indicate the proper line of trim or severance, particularly for ascertaining and regulating the length and natural hang of skirts, and the like.

The object is to insure greater convenience, rapidity an d accuracy in the marking of garments than has heretofore been attained,the distinguishing feature of the invention consisting in the use of a curved horizontal tube or conduit the inner concave side of which is conany desired form and construction.

My device is designed particularly and only for the marking of garments on horizontal lines, without direct handling or contact therewith; and the invention consists essentially in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed specifically.

The marker 1, consists of a curved tube or conduit preferably of semi-circular form or approximately so, in the inner convex surface of which are a series of holes 2. The marker 1, may be formed of a section of pipe bent to the required form and formed with the perforations 2, or it may be otherwise made in any desired manner, the essential feature being the series of horizontal holes 2. The marker 1 is supported adjustably upon a suit able stand by any desired mechanical expedient.

' Thus, by way of illustration in the drawings, the marker 1, is formed on its convex side with a sleeve 3, fitting over a vertical rod 4 and held adjustably thereon by a set screw 5,the rod 4, projecting upward from a suitable base or support 6, although the vertical adjustment of themarker 1, may obviously be provided for by other means if desired, with like results. One end of the marking tube 1, is closed as by a plug or cap 7, the other end being open and adapted to have applied to it one end of a flexible tube 8, to the other end of which is attached the nozzle 9 of a compressible bulb 10 of The function of the bulb is to'force powdered chalk or other suitable material reduced to an impalpable condition into the marking tube 1, and through the holes 2. The powder may be placed directly within the eompressible bulb 10, as I have found to be entirely practicable, or otherwise so disposed that the compression of the bulb will cause the injection of the powder into the marking tube 1.

The vertical rod 4 is formed with a scale 11, preferably in inches and fractions thereof by means of which the marker 1 may be definitely set to a prescribed vertical position.

The use of my improved marking device will be readily understood. Take for instance a skirt the bottom of which has to be cut or trimmed to render the edge true and of uniform height above the ground. The device being placed in proper position with relation to the wearer of the skirt, the marker is simply set vertically to the desired level and the bulb 10 compressed, ejecting through the semicircular row of holes 2 line jets of powder which impinge upon the skirt in a I true horizontal plane creating a well defined line of severance. The person still maintaining the same position, the device is moved to another position with relation to the person and the bulb 10 again pressed forming a continuation of the horizontal line first formed and this is repeated as often as is necessary to complete the circuit. Ordinarily two or three changes in position are sufficient to properly mark the garment. By thus' marking the garment without touching it by hand I attain important advantages. Where garments are marked by hand as heretofore the operation is not only difiicult and laborious, but it is also more or less inaccurate, the handling of the garment necessarily disturbing it more or less and altering the relation of I one part to another, whereas by causing the jets of marking powder to impinge simultaneously upon the opposed surface of the garment a true horizontal line is attained unaffected by the folds, and not impaired by any disturbance of the garment. Not only am 1 enabled to thus conveniently attain greater accuracy in marking a garment, but the whole operation may be performed in a small fraction of the'time requisite to mark the garment by hand.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,

1. In a garment marking device of the character designated, the combination of a curved conduit the concave surface of which is perforated longitudinally and horizontally, means for adjusting said conduit vertically upon its support, said support, and means for injecting a marking powder into said curved conduit and ejecting said powder therefrom through the concave side thereof, for the pur pose described.

2. In a garment marking device of the character designated, the combination of a curved conduit formed with a horizontal series of holes in its concave side, a vertical support for said conduit, adjustable means for securing said conduit to said vertical support, and means for injecting a marking powder into said conduit and ejecting the same therefrom through said horizontal series of holes, for the purpose described.

3. In a garment marking device of the character designated, the combination of a curved conduit formed with a horizontal series of holes in its concave side, a support for said conduit consisting of a standard formed with a vertical scale indicating different heights, adjustable means for securing said conduit on said standard and with relation to said vertical scale, and means for injecting a marking powder into said conduit and ejecting the same therefrom through said horizontal series of holes, for the purpose described.

In a garment marking device of the character designated, the combination of a horizontal semi-circular mark ing tube the concave side of which is perforated longitudinally and horizontally, adjustable means for securing said tube upon a vertical support, said vertical support, and means for injecting a marking powder into said semicircular marking tube and ejecting said powder therefrom through the concave side thereof, for the purpose de scribed.

5. In a garment marking device of the character desig' nated, the combination of a curved conduit the concave side of which is perforated horizontally and longitudinally, a flexible tube connecting with said curved conduit, and means for injecting a marking powder through said flexible tube into said curved conduit and ejecting the powder therefrom through the perforated concave side thereof, for

the purpose described.

6. In a garment marking device of the character designated, the combination of a curved conduit the concave side of which is perforated horizontally and longitudinally, adjustable means for securing said curved conduit to a Vertical support, said vertical support, a flexible tube connecting with said curved conduit, and means for injecting a marking powder through said flexible tube into said curved conduit and ejecting the powder therefrom through the perforated concave'side thereof, for the purpose described.

7. In a garment marking device of the character desig nated, the combination of a vertical standard, a curved horizontal marking tube formed with a series of holes in its concave side, adjustable means for securing said mark ing tube upon said vertical standard, means for closing one end of said horizontal marking tube, a flexible tube connecting with the otherwise open end of said horizontal marking tube, said flexible tube, and means for injecting a marking powder through said flexible tube into said horizontal marking tube and ejecting the same therefrom through said series of holes in the concave side thereof, for the purpose described.

8. In a garment marking device of the character designated, the combination of a supporting standard formed with a vertical scale indicating different heights, a curved horizontal marking tube formed with a series of holes in its concave side, adjustable means for securing said marking tube upon said supporting standard and with relation to the vertical scale thereon, means for closing one end of said horizontal marking tube, a flexible tube connecting with the otherwise open end of said horizontal marking tube, said flexible tube, and means for injecting a marking powder through said flexible tube into said horizontal marking tube and ejecting the same therefrom through said series of holes in the concave side thereof, for the pur pose described.

9. A skirt marker composed of a base, a rod projecting upwardly therefrom, a slide movable upon the rod, means for clamping the slide to the rod at different elevations, a perforated tube carried by the slide, and means for ejecting a marking powder from said tube, substantially as specified.

10. A skirt marker composed of a base, a rod projecting upwardly therefrom, a slide movable upon the rod, means for clamping the slide to the rod at different elevations, a curved perforated tube carried by the slide, and a powder gun communicating with the tube, substantially as specified.

11. In a garment marking device of the character designated, the combination of a curved conduit open longitudinally on its concave side in horizontal line, adjustable means for securing said curved conduit to a vertical support, said vertical support, and means for injecting a marking powder into and ejecting it through the open 'con' cave side of said curved conduit, for the purpose described.
