To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. PRIXGLE, a British subject, residing at Toronto, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and ustl'ul Improvemcn ts in Gages. of which the iollowing is a specii'ication.
The object of my invention is to produce a device of the class specified having ieatures ol' novelty and advantage. My particular object to provide a tool which is simple in constriu-tion and operation and is adapted for all the various purposes for which implements of this character are used.

In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2 (1 denotes the gage bar diann trically slotted as at c for the greater part oi its length. and in this slot a. slidef is suitably guided as by the tongues f and the grooves a". Lengthwise oi the bar and integral therewith is the eccentric e. The head I) is shaped to [it on the bar, having the eccentric I)" to cooperate with the eccentric a and is 01 course adjustable along the bar. It is seen that a turning movement oi the head by means of the cooperating eccentrics locks the head to the bar and also locks the slide in the bar.
The bar of my gage is provided at its end with marking and cutting points in, n, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and at the end of the slot with a point e which, in conuectiou with a pointy) projecting from the inner end oi the slide, forms a mortise gage. A marking point r projects irom the opposite side oi' the inner end of the slide. It is to be noted that the two marking points, the cutting points and the mortise points project from the bar in different radial planes. Thus. in this one implement [our distinct and separate tools are conibined and each can be used independently of the other.
The slide may be made in two pieces. as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, so that one half 1. can be moved longitudinally with respect to the other hall t and lo the bar.
Instead of forming an eccentric on the bar it may be made plain and one edge 01' the slide may project beyond the surface of the bar and be beveled off, as indicated at u in Fig. 5, while the opposite edge is cut away as at u, the binding action of the head being exerted on the slide to lock the parts together.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device oi the class described comprising a gagebar having a projecting marking point and with a longitut'linal slot provided with guide ways in its inner faces, a slide engaging said slot and provided with longitudinal ribs movably bearing in said guide ways and with a projecting nmrking point, a head adjustable longitudinally upon said bar and provided with locking means operating to lock the bar and the slide in adjusted position.
2. In an article of the character described the slotted gage-bar. the slide mounted in said slot, the head mounted on said bar, and means l'or locking the head and slide in any desir d position oiadjustment, said means comprising coiipel'atillg eccentric surfaces, one of which is carried by the head. the other being carried by the bar and iixed against: rotation with respect. thereto, said head being adapted for slight rotary motion with respect to the bar whereby the relative rotary movement; between the eccen tric parts causes them to bind the slide in the slot: and the head to the bar, substantially as described.

-l. in an article of the character described the slotted e-bar provided with an eccentric surface, the two-part slide mounted in said slot, the parts of said slide bcing guided for longitudinal adjustment with respect to the bar and to each other. the head mounted on the bar and having an interior eccentric surl'acc which moves rotarily on to the eccentric suri'acc otf said bar to bind the slide in lhe slot and the head on the bar, substantially as described.
5. In an article of the character described the gagehar provided with a projecting marking point and diametrically slotted throughout the greater part of its length, a slide mounted in and iilling said slot and provided with tongue and groove guides, points projecting from each side oi said slide near. its inner end. one oi said points cooperating with the point. projecting from the bar to form a mortise marking device. an eccentric integral with said her. and the head mounted on said bar and having an eccentric opening corresponding to the eccentric shoulder on the bar to bind the slide in the slot and the head to the bar, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
