UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK F. BAUMANN, OF CAMBRIDGE, ASSIGNOB TO HIMSELF AND TILLIAM J. FITZEMEYER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOEMAKERS EDGE-PLANES.
Specification' forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,860, dated January Q7, 1874; application iiled Dcember 17, 1 "3.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FREDERICK F. 'BAUMANN, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and4 State ot' Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shoemakers Edge-Planes 5 and I do hereby dec-lare that the following, taken in pany and form part of this specification, is a description of my invention sufficient to ena- United States Letters Patent No. 135,308, dated January 28, 187 3, have been granted to me for an improvement in shoemakers7 edgeplanes, said improvement consisting in applying an adjustable lip or gage, in combination with a fixed lip or gage as will be more fully seen by reference to said patent. In such plane one part of the stock is shown as forming the cutting-ed ge, and as acting in connection with the other part of the stock which forms the In my present invention, instead of making the stock itself the cutter, I apply to the movable stock-piece a cutting-bit, like a common plane-iron, which bit I am enabled to keep in better condition, and with it to use the tool to better advantage, than by making the stock with a cutting-edge.
My invention consists in a shoemakers edgeplane which, having the stationary lip and the adjustable lip,has also a movable cutting-blade applied to the removable part of the stock.
The drawing represents a tool embodying my construction.
Figure 1 shows the tool in side view.
Fig. j
2 is an opposite side view and section. Fig. 3 is an edge view 5 Fig. 4, an end view.
a denotes the handle; b, the sha-nk of the stock 5 c, the head and gage piece; d, the movable eutter-stock. cf denote the two parts ot' the stationary lip at one side of the tool; r/ 7l, the two parts of the adjust-able lip. These lips being disposed substantially as shown in my said Patent No. 135,308, and the piece d being made movable relatively to the piece c, and adjustable by means of a slot, fi, and screw 7.-, I form the inner or throat face of the piece (I to receive an adjustable steel bit or cutter, I, (made movable and adjustable by screws nl and slots 12,) the cutting-edge projecting beyond the gage-face o to an extent equal to the depth of cut to be made. By removing thc piece d access is had to the cutter l to adjust it, or to remove it for sharpening, or to change it for another, and by the use of the removable cutter a much more effective tool is made than when the piece d itself is made with a cuttingedge. The piece d may be formed with a concave seat to receive a concave cutter.
The edge-plane having the removable andA adjustable cutter l, in combination with the removable piece (I, stationary lips c f, and adjustable lips f/ l1., substantially as described.
.Executed this 1st day ot' December, A. D. 1873.
FREDERICK FE'RD. BAUMANN.
