STOVEPIPE ATTACHMENT.

STOVE PIPE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1907.
Application filed April 6, 1907- Serial No. 366,801.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY HEFFNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in chimney flue and stove pipe attachments, comprehending a structure adapted to render the flue opening in the wall fire proof and to effectually support the stove pipe projecting through said opening.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a thimble member of fire proof material designed to be secured in the flue opening and to receive the pipe section, in combination with a simple form of pipe support designed to be adjustably connected to said thimble. I h
The invention will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in section partly in elevation illustrating the application of my improvements, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, Fig. 3 a perspective of the stove pipe support, Fig. 4 an enlarged perspective of a portion of the same, partly sectioned to illustrate the adjustable feature.
Referring particularly to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates a thimble comprising a sleeve 2 preferably covered by a layer of asbestos or other fire proof material 3 and designed to be secured in the opening 4 of the chimney wall 5. At the forward end the sleeve 2 is formed with a laterally projected annular flange 6, designed to overlie the wall concentric with the opening 4 and to form an ornamental finish to the stove pipe connection. The sleeve 2 is preferably of such length as to space the relatively inner edge of the flange 6 from the proximate surface of the wall 5, for a purpose which will presently appear.
The thimble 1 is secured in place in the wall through the medium of holding members 7 comprising hook shaped bars designed to be applied on the inner side of the wall 5 with the hook members 8 engaging openings 9 formed in the thimble wall, the projected portions of the hook members being designed to lie snugly against the relatively inner surface of the wall and carrying set screws 10 to engage the wall and thereby secure the thimble in applied position.
In conjunction with the thimble described the invention contemplates a pipe holder designed to embrace the latter at the elbow joint and comprising a suitable length of wire bent to form a ring 11 to encircle the pipe below the elbow, a loop portion 13 being terminally connected to the ring 11 at diametrically opposing points and projected at right angles to the plane of the ring to overlie the elbow section 14 of the pipe. From the ring member the holder is projected in the form of a single strand 15, on which is secured an L-shaped clamp 16 preferably by passing the length 15 through one arm of the clamp, as shown. The length 15 of the holder is formed in a return bend at 17 and passed through the remaining arm of the clamp 16, a set screw 18 cooperating with the clamp to bear upon the terminal section of the holder, as clearly shown inFig. 3. A retaining member 19, preferably of hook form, is secured in the flange 6 of the thimble, being preferably threaded beyond said flange for the application of securing nuts 20.
In use the thimble applied in the manner described with the applied hook, the holder is arranged to embrace the pipe sections as described, and the loop 17 passed over the hook. The terminal of the length 15 is then drawn upon to force the pipe into proper relation to the hook 19 after which the set screw 18 is tightened to maintain the holder in this position.
The parts thus described provide an effective and fire proof line for the flue opening in the wall, and also provide a pipe holder adapted to effectually support and position the pipe relative to said flue opening, which holder is connected directly to and maintained in position by the thimble. The parts are readily disconnected when not desired for use, and the thimble 1 is designed to receive the cover plate ordinarily used to close the flue opening when the stove pipe is removed therefrom.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A holder comprising a ring, a loop member projecting at right angles therefrom, a connecting strand projecting from the ring and including a terminal section, a clamp member secured upon said strand, and means carried by the clamp member for adjustablyengaging the terminal section, whereby to provide a securing loop at the terminal of the strand:
2. A holder comprising a ring, a loop member projecting at right angles therefrom, a connecting strand projecting from the ring and including a terminal section, a clamp member secured upon said strand, and means carried by the clamp member for adjustably engaging the terminal section, whereby to provide a securing loop at the terminal of the strand, in combination with a flue thimble, a hook member curried thereby and adapted to receive the strand loop, and means for securing the thimble in place.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. HARRY HEEFNER.
