ROOF COLLAR OR FLANGE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 690,350, dated December 31, 1901.
Application filed August 3l, 19011 Serial No. 73,962. (No model.)
To cl/ZZ whom, Lt may concern:
Beit known that l, THOMAS P. BOLGEIL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Roof Collar or Flange, of which the'` following is a specication.
My invention is an improved roof collar or tiange, and has for its object to provide a device for forming a water-tight packing and joint around a steam or vent pipe Where the latter projects through the roof or 'any portion of a building.' ject I arrange a plate to be connected to the building in any suitable way, from which projects a pipe section or sleevethat is designed to encircle the projecting end of a steam or other pipe to which isfirmly held a sleeve carrying a packing-ring, the lower end of the sleeve sliding over the upper end of the pipesection, thereby forming an arrangement for excluding rain or snow from the' interior of the building.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device for the. above-stated purpose that will allow of certain movements of the pipe without decreasing the effectiveness of the packing; and with these objects in view my invention consists in the peculiar and novel combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be fully described in the following specification and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement as in use. Fig. 2 is a verticallongitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3-is a detail cross-section taken about on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention I employ a baseplate A, preferably made of sheet-copper, to which is connected in any suit-able manner a vertically-extending pipe-section B, through which the steam or vent pipe C protrudes. A clamping sleeve or ring D is positioned over the upper end of the pipesection and has its upper edge terminating in an annular semicircular socket portion D', in which is held an asbestos packing band or gasket E, that is held tightly against the steam or vent pipe C by the clamping bolts and nuts d d, which project through perfo- In carrying out this 0b rated laterally-extending ears d d,formed at tlremeeting ends of t-he band or collar D. When the parts are thus assembled, it will be readily seen that the band or sleeve D, being firmly clamped to the vent-pipe C, will move therewith when the pipe C is vertically moved through the settling of the building or other causes, and by forming the gasket of asbestos-the same will adjust itself to the expansion or contraction of the pipe which may be caused by the climatic condition or the temperature of the pipe. It will also be understood that the clam ping-sleeve ts loosely over the end of the pipe-section B, thereby allowing of a free and easy movement.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;-
1. The combination of a base-plate having a pipe-section projecting therefrom, a pipe projecting through the said pipe-section, a clamping ring orbandhavingits upperendterminating in an annular semicircular socket portion, an asbestos packing ring or gasket heldin the said semicircular recess, the lower end of said band or sleeve being loosely held over the end of the pipe-section, and means for holding the said band or sleeve in position upon -the said pipe, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a base-plate having a vertically-extending pipe-section project-r ing therefrom, a vent-pipe projecting through the said pipe-section, a clamping ring or band firmly held to the said pipe and ittingloosely over the said pipe-section and a packing-ring interposed between the said clamping ring or band and the said vent-pipe, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of a base-plate having a pipe-section projecting therefrom, a ventpipe protruding through the said pipe-section, and a clamping ring or band carryinga packing-ring arranged upon the pipe and adapted for inclosing the upper end of the vent-pipe and fitting looselyl thereon, substantially as shown and described.-
THOMAS P. BO'LG'ER.
