To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN C. BARRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkersburg, in the county of Wood and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to boxes or cases designed especially for use in carrying engineers supplies, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character which will properly receive and hold the various supplies, and one wherein the supplies may be stored in compact form and the device as a whole present a neat, compact appearance.

With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a box embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof. Fig. 4 is a perspective view, showing the box in open condition. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the box with the cover removed.

Referring to the drawings, it will beseen that the box comprises a front wall 1, a rear wall 2, end walls 3, a bottom 4 and a lid or cover 5, the latter being attached to the rear wall 2 by means of hinges 6, while the front wall 1 is attached at its lower edge to the bottom 4 by hinges 7, whereby the wall 1 together with the lid 5 may be moved to open position, as seen in Fig. 4, the opening movement of said parts being limited respectively by means of chains 8 and 9.

The bottom 4 of the case, which is removable and has an upstanding marginal flange, is provided on its inner face with a series of upstanding flanges forming sockets or steps 10, 11, 12, in which are fitted respectively the lower ends of a plurality of oil cans 13,14, 15, there being also formed on said bottom a socket or step 16 adapted to receive the lower end of'a filling can 1.7 and a plurality of sockets or steps 18, 19, 20, in which are fitted respectively the lower ends of a pair of hand oilers 21, 22, and a torch 23, while formed in the box and on the lid 5 thereof are a plurality of compartments 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, adapted to receive respectively the various books which it is customary for the engineer to carry, such, for instance, as a book of rules, a time book, a coal book, and one or more mechanical works, together with various small articles and tools, such as gaskets, water glasses, gloves, cap, &c.

The box, which is provided on its cover with a foldable bail or handle 30 and on its ends with similar bails or handles 31 may be temporarily locked in closed position by means of locking bolts 32 slidably mounted in bearings 33 on the cover and adapted for engagement with keepers 34 fixed upon the end walls 3, on which are also pivoted latching hooks 35 arranged for engagement with pins or keepers 36 fixed to the ends of the front wall 1 for holding said wall in closed position when the cover 5 is open, while carried by the cover 5 is a hasp-37 adapted for engagement with a staple 38 fixed on the front wall 1, but in turn receives the shackle of a lock 39 for securing the box inclosed condition.

In practice, the various articles composing the equipment are arranged in the case, as seen in Fig. 4, the case being during transportation closed and locked, as in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, it being understood, of course, that the case may be readily opened to permit removal of its contents when circumstances require. It may be mentioned that while the engineer is on duty the bottom or tray 4 having the cans positioned thereon may be removed from the case and placed in a proper position within the engine cab to permit of convenient access being had to the cans, &c.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. An cngineers supply box having a pivoted cover and front wall, the latter being provided at its ends with projecting pins, fastening hooks pivoted on the end walls of the box for engagement with the pins to fix said front wall in closed position, means for locking the cover in closed position, and a removable tray arranged in the box and having upstanding flanges attached thereto and forming a number of sockets to receive respectively the lower ends of a plurality of vessels.

2. An engineers supply box having a pivoted cover and front wall, means for temporarily locking the latter in closed position, sliding bolts mounted on the cover, keepers attached to the end walls of the box for engagement by said bolts to secure the cover in closed position, and a removable tray arranged in the box and provided with a plurality of sockets to receive the lower ends of a plurality of vessels.
