PATENT OFFICE.
STANDARD FOR CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1907.
Application filed May 15, 1906, Serial No. 316,979. Renewed March 26,1907. Serial No. 364,646.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that Ennn'r'r LEE PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willacoochee, in the county of Coffee and Slate of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Standards for Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a lull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in standards for cars, and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and ellicient device of this nature which is adapted to be fastened to the side of a car and so construrted that it may be swung to a vertical position or turned down below the surface of the car. 7
The invention consisls further in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing, in solid lines, my invention swung lo a vertical position, and, in dotted lines, in a lowered position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the swiveled plate on which the standard is mounted, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the locking key.
ieferenco now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the side of a car to which a plate l? is secured.
C designates a swiveled disk having an aperture C therein adapted to receive a spring-pressed pin D which ox tends through the plate 11 and is adapted to hold the disk in a fixed position. Fastened to said disk is a strap E having a slot E between the portions which are bent upon themselves, and F is a bolt which is mounted in registering aperturesin said strap and forms a pivot upon which the standard G is mounted. it will be noted by the sectional view of the drawings that said slot is somewhat longer than the width of the lower portion oi said standard, whereby the standard may have a slight tilting movement upon its pivot in a plane at right angles to the length of the car.
H is a key having a head H at its lower end bent at an angle as at I. The shank portion of said key is wedge-shaped and is adapted to lit the outer edge of the standard and the end of the slot for the purpose of holding the inner marginal edge of the standard against any material which may be placed upon the platform of the car and for which the standard is utilized to hold the same thereon. Said standard has an aperture Q formed therein, whereby the standard may be lowcred, if desired.
When it is desired to swing the standard down to the position shown in dotted lines in the drawings, the spring-pressed pin is pushed inward out of the aperture in the disk, after which the disk, which is swiveled, is allowed to turn freely and the standard will assume a horizontal position. By the provision of the wedgeshaped key, which is permanently held within said slot, the standard may be forced against lumber or other material being conveyed upon the car, and if it is desired to release the standard from the material upon the car, said key may be withdrawn, thereby allowing the standard to tilt outward slightly.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a car, a plate secured thereto, a disk swiveled to said plate, a pivotal standard mounted upon said disk, and means for holding the standard in an upright position, as set forth.
2. In combination with a car, a plate secured thereto, a disk swiveled to said plate, a pivotal standard mounted upon said disk, and a spring-pressed pin carried by the plate and adapted to engage an aperture in the disk to hold the standard in an upright position, as set forth.
In combination with a car, a plate secured thereto, a disk swiveled to said plate, a trap secured to said disk, a standard pivotally mounted in a slot formed by said strap, and a key interposed between the edge of the stand' ard and the end of the slot, as set forth.
-l. In combination with a car, a plate secured thereto, a disk swiveled to said plate, a strap secured to said disk, :1 standard pivotally mounted in a slot formed by said strap, and a key interposed between the edge of the standard and end of the slot in which the latter is pivoted, the shank portion of said key being inclined and its lower end angled, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EMMETT LEE PETERSON.
