Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1907.
Application filed December 31,1906. Serial No. 850,164,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, .IAMIGS A. CLnnnN'rs, a citizen of the United States, r siding at Abingdou, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anchoring Devices for Wire-Stretchers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and xact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to new and useful improvem outs in anchoring devices for wire stretchers, and consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as illustrated in the drawing and set forth in the specification and claims hereunto appended.
In building a wire fence, to make a neat and satisfactory end finish, it is necessary to have some object beyond the end post to anchor the wire stretcher to. any methods have heretofore been resorted to, to anchor the wire stretcher, but so far as I have been able to learn have all proved cumbersome and objectionable, and the obj net of my invention is the production of a device of simple and economical construction that may be readily secured to the end post of a wire fence, and support the wire stretcher.
In the accompanying drawing,-the figure is a side elevation of my invention in position to anchor a wire stretcher.
My invention is described as follows The numeral 1 represents a substantially U-shaped frame, having oblique arms 2 and a central vertical part 3. When in use, the ends of the arms 2 are held in engagement with the end or anchoring post 4- of a wire fence by means of a suspension hook 5, removably secured at its upper end to said end or anchoring post 4 and pivoted at its opposite end in the eye of an eye-bolt 6 secured through the upper arm of said frame near its end, and provided at its lower end with a nut 7.
A horizontal bracket 8 having transverse perforations 9 and 10 in its front and rear ends, respectively, is rigidly and removabl y secured to the vertical part 3 of said frame 1, and rcnnrvably secured in the outer perforated end of said bracket 8 is an anchor orground-rod 11, the lower eyed end of which is secured to the ground by a stake pin 12 or other equivalent means. Said ground or anchor rod 8 serves to assist in supporting and prevents lateral displacement of said frame.
When in use, the said frame 1 may be secured to the end or anchoring post t of a wire fence, at any desired point along its length and thus accommodated to any width of woven wire to be put up. The lower arm 3 I of said frame may be provided with a vertical. perforation to permit the eyebol't 6 to be secured thereto, if found desirable.
In the application of my invention the outer end of the wire stretcher is secured in the inner perforated end of said bracket.
It will be apparent that my invention is of such construction and is susceptible of such changes Without departing from the spirit thereof that it may be arranged to accommodate various makes of wire stretchers. The substantially U-shaped frame is preferably, but not necessarily, made of light steel tubing. In fact, I may employ any material found most desirable and advantageous in the construction and application of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent," is
1. In an anchoring device for wire stretcher-s, an anchoring post provided with a keeper, a substantially U- shaped frame arranged to extend horizontally beyond the post and having its inner ends disposed to bear against one face of the latter, a supporting hook detachably engaged with one of the side portions of the frame and formed for engagement with the keeper to support the inner end of the frame, a bracket attached to the end portion of the frame and provided at its rear end with an eye to be engaged by the stretcher, and at its forward end with a second eye, an anchor rod having its upper end formed for engagement with said second eye, and means for fixing the lower end of the rod to the ground.
2. In an anchoring device for wire stretchers, an anchoring post provided with a keeper, :1 horizontal U-sliaped frame arranged to project beyond the post and having the ends of its side portions seated against the post, said portions being perforated at points adjacent their rear ends, an eye bolt rcinovably engaged through one of the perforations, a supporting hook pivotally engaged with the eye bolt and formed for engagement with the keeper to support the rear end of the frame, a horizontal bracket reniovably engaged with the forward end portion of the frame and having its rear end formed for engagement with the stretcher, a vertical anchor rod engaged at its upper end with the bracket and provided at its lower end with an eye, and a stake pin entered through said eye into engagement with the ground for fixing the lower end of the rod.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES A. CLEMENTS.
