SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,194, dated December 5, 1893.
Application filed March 28, 1893- Serial No. 467,931. (No model.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, JOHN A. SELLERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gallitzin, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brackets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will v enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a supportingbracket adapted to be used on a ladder (either side) on window sills, and on porches where there is a baluster, to form a support for a platform, it being more especially arranged for use as a pain'ters platform support.
My invention has for its object to provide a bracket of this character, simple and inexpensive in its construction, easily adjusted and effective forits desired purpose; and such invention consists in the peculiar and novel combination of parts, .all of which will hereinafter be fully described in the specification and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective View of my improved bracket. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing it as applied to a ladder; and Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing it as applied to a window sill and ladder.
My improved bracket consists of a main or body portion which is formed of two wrought iron sections A A, preferably about threeeighths of an inch thick and one and oneeighth inches wide, and each section comprises an outwardly extending member which forms a supporting arm a, the inner ends of which are bent at right angles, but in opposite directions as at B B, which in turn are bent again at right angles rearward parallel with the members A to form brace members 0, which members are however disposed with their flat faces horizontal, the sections A being turned at the bonds at as shown. At
each bend a the members C are curved up to form hook portions 0, their outer ends being also curved up at c and down at c for a purpose hereinafter explained. The sections A are connected, but held spaced apart, to form a way D, by the space blocks E at the outer and inner ends of the parallel members a, through whichthe securing rivets pass. The members a a have a series of apertures F at their outer ends and a series of apertures F at their ends, and through any one of the apertures F is passed a bolt G which also passes through the upper end of a diagonally disposed brace bar H, the upper end of which passes between the members a and is provided with a series of apertures h h whereby it can be adj ustably secured to the outer end of such members a by means of the bolt G.
The lower end of the diagonal bar H has a series of apertures h h at its lower end,'which end passes through the bifurcated endj of a verticalbar J, which bar has a single aperture j at its bifurcated end, through which and any one of the apertures h the securing bolt I passes. The upper end of the bar J has a series of perforations 9' such end passes up between the members a ct and is secured thereto adjustably both laterally and vertically, by means of a bolt K which passes through one set of the apertures F and any one of the apertures j and the bar J.
L indicates a short rearwardly extended brace, the lower end of which is bifurcated and straddles the bar J, it being adj ustably held thereon by aboltM, which passes through one of the aperturesj and one set of apertures Z Z and the brace L.
N indicates a claw or clamp member, which is detachably secured upon the diagonal brace bar, its body portion at being cuff-like to readily slip on or off such brace bar, and such bodyhas formed integral therewith oppositely extending hook members or claws n W.
The mannerin which myimproved bracket can be adapted for use will be clearly understood from Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. In Fig. 2 I have shown the same in use as a ladder bracket; in this case the vertical bar J and the short brace L are not used. The forward hook portions 0 c engage one of the rungs of the ladder while the clamp member or support Njs moved down on the diagonal member, to engage one of the rungs below, the diagonal brace bar H having been set and fixedly adjusted between the main supporting bars a a.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the bracket used as a combined window sill and ladder bracket. In this arrangement the vertical bracket J and the short brace bar L are used; the end hooks of the main sections A being clamped over the inner edge of the sill, the clamp or supporting member N adjusted upon the diagonal brace bar to engage the rung on the ladder from the rear side, while the short brace bar L bears against the wall or under side of the sill as shown.
It is obvious that in practice apair of brackets are employed to support the ends of the scaifold board 0, and it will also be readily apparent that by adjusting the several parts of the bracket it can be readily adapted for use in difierent ways than that shown.
By constructing the several parts of bar iron as stated, and arranging the main sections as shown, the bracket can be produced at a very small cost and yet possess the required strength and lightness.
By forming the rear ends of the main sec tions A A with upwardly curved hooked portions, the same can be readily hooked over a rung or a transverse rod extended over the window opening, in case the hooks could not be conveniently hooked over the inside of the sill.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the main sections A, having rearwardly extending brace portions, formed with hook portions as at c and c, the diagonal brace bar H and the vertical brace bar J all arranged substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination, the main sections A, having their outer members a (1 held spaced apart to form a way D, their rear ends extended to form bracket members 0, said members having hook portions 0' 0 the diagonal brace bar H adjustably held at its upper end in the way D, the vertical bar J adjustably held at its upper end in such way D, and its lower end pivotally and adj ustably connected with the lower end of the bar H, the clamp member N adjustably held on the bar H and the brace L adjustably held on the bar J, all arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
