Description

THAWING- FURNACE.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 25, 1907.

UNITE STATES THOMAS 1). BAUSHER, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
THAWING-FURNACE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1907.
Application filed July 25,1907. Serial No. 385,469.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS D. BAUSHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thawing- Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in thawing furnaces and the object is to provide a furnace for street use where it is desired to thaw the frozen ground for the purpose of rapidly securing access to underground pipes or joints.
Another object is to thaw the man hole covers of sewers during cold weather.
The invention consists of a rectangular casing in which a specially prepared fuel is burned and in which a down draft is secured, thus throwing the heat against the ground.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows a vertical central sectional view of my improved furnace.
The numeral 1 designates the casing of the furnace. This casing is rectangular in form and is adapted to rest on the ground.
The numeral 2 designates the bottom closure. This closure is applied when the furnace is to be applied to a man hole, and is intended to prevent the flame from coming in direct contact with the man-hole for the purpose of preventing an explosion of gas. This closure is removably secured to the casing by means of set screws 3. v
Inside the casing I hang, by means of braces 5, the
fuel support 4. This support has a central opening in which is secured a stack 6, this stack provides the only outlet from the top of the furnace.
The support 4 is formed with a series of depending arms 8 to the bottom of which is secured a deflector plate 7.
The fuel is laid on the top of the support 4 and ignited. The heat and smoke will be drawn down around the outer edges of the support and pass between the arms 8 and up through the stack 6, in the direction indicated in the drawing by arrows the deflector plate 7 serving to prevent a direct draft.
With this furnace the heat will be thrown down against the ground and the local application thereof will quickly thaw the earth suficiently to allow its easy removal.
The casing may if desired be made circular or in any other form desired.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a thawing furnace a rectangular casing adapted to rest on the ground, a closure adapted to be removahly secured to the bottom thereof, a fuel support suspended in side said casing above the lower edge thereof, a stack passing through said casing and fuel support, a deflector plate suspended from said support below said stack and arms -securing said plate to said support.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS D. BAUSHER.
