To all whom t may concern Be it known-that I, F RANK FUNARO, a
citizen of the United States, residing at simply constructed device of this character possessing` increased efliciency and utility.
Another object of the invention is to pro- -vide a device of this character whereby the draft of the chimney is improved and all danger of the entrance of rain, snow and thev like is prevented, and likewise preventing the smoke and other products of the combustion being blown backwardly into the chimney.
Another object of the invention is to'provide a simply constructed device which may be applied to certain forms of chimney caps already constructed, or to chimney caps especially constructed to receive the attachment.
IVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then speciiically'pointed out in the claims; and, in the drawings illustrative of t-he preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device constructed wholly of sheetmetal and applied to a chimney, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional elevation on the line 3*?) of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
The improved device may beconstructed as a whole and applied to an ordinary chimney top, or may be arranged for application to any ordinary form of vitrified or burned clay cap in common use, and for the purpose of illustration is shown applied in both forms, but it will be understood that the invention is not necessarily limited to any specific manner of applying the same to a chimney.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the improved device is shown in complete form and constructed wholly of sheet metal and applied to a conventional chimney represented at 10.
The improved device comprises a main shell or body 11 suitably supported as at 12 upon the chimney top, and this supporting portion 12 will vary in accordance with the form of the chimney, as will be understood.
The shell 11 is closed at the top as shown at 13 and provided with relatively large openings 14 in the side walls near the top. Fitting over the shell 11 is a hood device preferably formed with a conical roof or cover portion 15 having lateral projections 16 at its sides, the projections being slightly wider than the openings 14 of the shell and extending above the same and forming guards thereover, as shown. The projections 16 are directed downwardly at their outer ends as shown at-17 with the lower ends 18 of the downwardly projecting portions extending below the lower lines of the openings 14, as shown. Extending inwardly from the vertical edges of the downwardly projecting portionsl? are wings 19 which projecttoward the side edges of the openings 14, the wings being further provided with inwardly directed extensions 20. By this means each of the openings 14 is covered and protected with a hood-like structure formed of the upper projections 1G, the downwardly projecting portions 17 and the inwardly directed wings 19-20. By this means the wind does not blow directly into the openings 14, but is deflected therefrom, as will be obvious. The roof or cover portion 15 is supported from the cover 13 by a suitable brace device 21, as shown in Fig. 3. By this simple arrangement when the wind is blowing directly toward one of the depending hood like structures 17 the aperture 14 which is located directly opposite this protecting portion is correspondingly protected and the wind caused to pass through the openings between the wings 19 and the body of the shell at the sides, and thus form a strong suction to cause the products of the combustion to flow from the chimney and through the cap, and thus materially accelerate the draft. If the wind is blowing against one corner of the chimney the same result is produced as the air is caused to pass through the relatively narrow spaces and openings and over the top of the chimney, and produce the same eifect. In the improved device the force of the currents which are caused to pass through the interstices are so rapid that they are never deflected downwarlly into the chimney, but
are caused to pass rapidly over the chimney and thus carry the upwardly iiowing products of the combustion with them.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured of any suitable material or 'of any suitable combination of materials, and readily attached to chimneys of varying sizes and proportions and to smoke stacks of varying forms and sizes.

2. In a chimney cap, the combination of a shell closed at the top and adapted to bear over a chimney and having openings in its sides, a hood tting over said shell and with 'outwardly directed portions forming guards above said shell openings, downwardly directed guards depending from the outwardly directed guards and spaced from said openings, wings directed inwardly from said last mentioned guards and extending below the openings of the shell, said wings being provided with apertures which extend above the top of the shell to the hood and means for det-achably connecting said hood to said shell.
3. In a chimney cap, the combination of a shell closed at the top and adapted to bear over a chimney and having openings in its sides, a closed-top hood supported above said closed-top shell and with outwardly directed portions forming guards above said shell openings, downwardly directed guards depending from the outwardly directed guards and spaced from said openings andextending below the same, and wings directed inwardly from said last mentioned guards and eX- tending below the same, the Alowerportions of said wings being engaged against the shell, said wings being provided with apertures which extend above the top of the shell to the hood.
