UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL SCOTT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND HENRY C. BECKER, OF SAME PLACE.
CHIMNEY QR VENTILATOR CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,135, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed November 5, 1889. Serial No. 329,324. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL SCOTT, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Chimney or Ventilator Caps or Cowls, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to caps or cowls which are to be placed upon the upper end of ventilator shafts or chimneys; and the object of the improvement is to induce a draft up the Ventilator shaft or chimney irrespective of the direction in which the Wind may be blowing and as a consequence to preventing the wind from passing down the chimney or ventilator.
I will describe in detail a chimney or ventilator-cap or cowl embodying my improvement, and then point out the novel features in a claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a chimney cap or cowl embodying my improvement and showing a portion of a chimney or flue upon which the same is arranged. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. V
Similar letters ofreference designate corresponding parts in both the figures.
A designates a chimney or flue. This chimney or flue may be of any desired shape, but I have illustrated it as cylindrical.
This cap or cowl is composed of a downwardly and inwardly extending portion a in the form of an inverted frustum of a cone. To the upper edge portion of the part ais secured an upwardly and inwardly extending portion a, forming the frustum of a cone. Surrounding the portion a and either secured thereto or made integral therewith is an outwardly-flaring portion a The cap or cowl is supported from the portion a by means of supporting-pieces (1 secured near their upper ends to the lower edge portion of the portion a and at their lower ends to a sleeve at, which sleeve is adapted to be passed over the upper end portion of the chimney or flue A. I have shown a ring a surrounding the sleeve o near the lower part of the latter. Between said ring a and the sleeve 0 the lower ends of the supporting-pieces a are secured. They may thus be secured by solder, rivets, or otherwise.
It will be observed that the supportingpieces a maintain the portion a of the cap or cowl at a considerable distance from the chimney or flue, so that there will be a space a between said chimney or flue and the portion a,-through which the wind may freely blow irrespective of the direction from which it may come.
Surrounding the caporcowl, andmaintained at a considerable distance above the same, is a deflector B. This deflector has a closed bottom or under side and is supported over the portion a in the cap or cowl, by means of supporting-pieces b, which supportingpieces are secured near one of their ends to the portion a and near their other ends to the deflector B. The deflector B is maintained at a height above the cap or cowl, so that a clear space for the circulation of the wind will be afforded between the upper end of the cap or cowl and the deflector.
It is to be o pserved that the space inclosed by the portion a of the cap or cowl above the chimney is wholly free and unobstructed.
The construction of this cap or cowlis such that no matter in what direction the wind may be blowing an upward draft will be caused through the chimney or flue and no wind can blow down the same.
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a sleeve adapted to be passed downwardly about the upper end of a chimney or flue, of a cap or cowl consisting of a downwardly andinwardly extending portion a, supported from said sleeve so that a space will be left between it and the sleeve upon all sides, an upwardly and inwardly extending portion a, supported by the portion a, an outwardly-flaring portion 0, upon the upper end of the portion a, and a deflector having a closed bottom supported upon said portion a so that an open space will be left between said deflector and the portion (1 the space inclosed by the portion a above said sleeve being wholly unobstructed, substantially as specified.
, DANIEL SCOTT. Witnesses:
