Description

. applied to tools o f various sizes, the series of holes was l 5mm uitml WILLIAM BAXTER, OE NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HUISELF ANI) IVILLIAM D. RUSSELL, ASSIGNORS TO BAXTER, WRENGELOOMPAN Y.
` Letters .Patent No. 86,802, dated Februa/ry 9, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN' HANDLES FCR TAPS, AUG-ERS, DRILLS, &c.
The ,Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it 'ma/y concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BAXTER, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles or Wrenches for Taps, Beamers, Drills, Angers, and other tools; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective View of a tool-handle or wrench, made in accordance with my invention, and
Figure 2 is a longitudinal central section ofthe same.
In ordinary tap-wrenches or handles, designed to be intended to t the different tools, extends along the wrench or handle in the direction of its length, and, consequently, all but one of the holes are removed from the centre of the handle, which is not only productive of inconvenience, but often` is the cause of` damaging or breaking of the tap oryother tool with which the handle is used. v
The primary object of my invention is to cbviate this difculty'; to. which end,-
It consists of a wrench orhandle, provided at its centre with a metal ballror boss, in which is formed a series of holes, of different sizes, to fit correspondingly# sized tools, each hole being central to the length of the handle.
A further object I have in view, is to construct the handle or wrench in such manner that, without increas-4 ing the weight, it may be made of a size sufficiently large to be easily grasped and held with the hand without discomfort; that, when made of malleable iron, it may be more thoroughly annealed;` and that it may have greater strength with less material than has heretofore been practicable.
These important advantages 1' attain by making the wrench hollow pr tubular, the shape of the core corresponding very nearly to the exterior form'of the handle, excepting at the centre, where the boss is located, this part being left thicker, so as to give strength where it is most required.
vIn the drawings, the handle A is provided with the In the boss are formed the different-sized holes, a, for the purposes hereinbefore indicated, arranged as seen in the drawing, so that each' hole is located midway between the two ends of the wrench.
The holes may, ofcourse, vary in number and shape, according to the size of the boss, and size and `shape of the different tools to which it is to be applied; and,
with respect to the boss itself, it is manifest that it may be ball-shaped, as-shown in the drawing, or of any other form adapted to the purpose.
By this arrangement, all the holes are eqnidistant from the end ofthe handle, and thus all unequal sirain or bearing upon the tool is avoided, and the handle itself` is made stronger and more convenient for use.
The tubular structure of the wrench or handle is shown clearly in fig. 2, and I greatly prefer to thu's construct it. The weight of the tool is much lessened thereby, it can be made of a comfortable size for the hand, and the metal, if malleable, can be annealed more quickly, inexpensively', and thoroughly, than if it were solid, as is Well known to those acquainted with this branch of the industrial arts. r
The metal thickens toward the central boss B, which is lnearly solid, greater strength being required at this point than at points further removed from the centre.
It will be, of course,`umlerstoed that the wrench vmay be cast or formed in any other suitable manner, and that it may either be cast hollow, or the coringout may be eifected after casting.
Having described my invention, and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect, v .What I'claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described handle or wrench for taps and central boss B, the two being cast in one piece.
