Description
No. 867,500. PATNTED OCT. 1, 1907. J. R. HARBBGK. CONTAINER'TOP.
APPLICATION FILED APILG. 1907.
FIG. Q.
@NITE S ATE CDNTAINER-TQP.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JnRvis R. HAnneK, a citizen of the United States, and a' resident at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Container-Top, o which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a container head having an opening and a iiange projecting-inwardly around the opening, in a closure for said opening consisting of a plug or shell of sheet metal having its lower end closed, and in a brous gasket secured thereto, the closure extending below said flangcso that when. the gasket swells', it will engage'thelower edge ol the flange and thus prevent the closure from coming. out.
Myv invention isl illustrated in v'the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure l is a view of a cross section of the upper end of a container with three fourths of the closure in position. Fig. 2 is a plan of the head and closure. Fig
3 shows a modified construction of closure.
Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views,
In the drawings, l. is the body of a container and 2 the head secured tliereto in any Vdesired manner. An opening is formed in the head and a flange 3 bent down -as shown in Fig. l.' A bead 4 may be formed just around the flange for the purpose of stiffening the head, il" desired. .Tlie ange 3 tapers inwardly as shown, the amount of taper however being very slight,
The closure for the opening is preferably formed of sheet metal and Lonsists of a shell 5 having its lower end closed by a bottom 46.l A flange 7 extendsioutwardly from the upper edge 'of the shell and has its outer edge bent inwardly to secure the gasket S. 'lhis gasket 8 is made of fibrous material, strong paper or vegetable parchment preferred, and is drawn to closely fit the closure and is secured thereto by means ofthe flange '7. Or it may be secured by the ufalse Wire-7 9 shown in Fig. 3. The closure and gasket pro- `ject below the flange 3, and the material of the gasket should be of such strength that it will hold the closure in position because oi the bite between the lower edge of the Harige 3 and the gasket. To insure this engagement between the flange and gasket, the gasket Specification of Letters Patent. l

isfusnally made of fibrous material adapted to absorb a portion of the contents ofthe container, when liquid. But for containers for dry or non absorbable materials, the gasket may be formed of a compressible material, in which ease, the closure will be forced downl to position, compressing the gasket, which will expand or swell when the pressure is relieved and form a ridge just under the edge oi vthe flange. Because of the great changes of atmosphere to which these gaskets are often `exposed before they are used, it may be necessary to treat the same so they will not be appreciably affected by changes of temperature or humidity. Where the containers are to be nsed'for sibstances containing oils that willA dissolve paraffin, this substance may be employed. A mixture'of glycerin and glue is also valuable, as itproteets the gasket from expanding and shrinking, yet 4does not prevent it from further absorbing the contents of the container. As this mixture remains soft, the gasket will swellbelow the flange after it has been compressed between the llange 3 and the closure.
The amountv of taper of the flange 3 and the closure should be the same, and mayvary from almost nothing up to. five degrees on each side. .The advantage' -ltrons material'secured across the closed end and around the shell of ,the closure, this gasket being adapted to swell by reason or' absorbing o. portion of the material iu the container and to project over the lower edge of the flange of the head and thus securely hold the closure in position.
In testimony whereof, I have'signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
