Be it known that l, Jnnvls ll.. ltinmcck, t citizen oi' the United States, and residingr at Detroit, in the' county of lVayne and State of ll'lichigan. have invented a new and nse'ful Containcr-Closure, ot' which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to mntainer tops and its. object is to provide a sealing gasket whereby the closure of a container top may be rendered fluid tight without thel ase ot solder.
This invention consists oi a closure having a substantially cylindrical portion, a stitfening [lange at one end of the cylindrical portion, a disk closing the other end, and a circumferential groove formed in the cylindrical portion between the disk and the flange; together with a container head provided with a cylindrical flange extending inwardly; an annular gasket ot' flexible n|ate rial, which is also pre'lerably elastic, :fitted into the groove in the closure; the parts being so proportioned that when the closurel is pressed into the opening in the head the gasketwill 'form a vapor tight.4 `ioint between the cylindrical flange and the head and the cylindrical portion of the closure.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a plan of a container top provided with this improved closure. Fig. 2 is an elevation ot a container with a part of the upper portion broken away to show the manner ot securing the head and closure in position. In the drawings l is the body of the container having a bottom 2 ot' any desirable type. The head It is formed with a circular portion 4 to receive the upper edge of the body. The head in provided with an inwardly extending, substantially cylindrical flange 5. The closnre has a substantial eylindrical portion (l provided with an inwardly extending beaded or grooved portion 7, and a disk 8 closing thelower end. At the npper endot the c vliinlrieal portion is an outwardly extending radial flange tt which has its edge turned inwardly in order to stitlen it. A gasketv l0, preferably in the lt'orm ol a rubber band, is placed in the groove in the cylindrical portion t5 ot' the closure and should he of such size that it slightly proliects beyond the cylindrical wall. The eylindrieal portion t ot' the closure should be ot' such size that it will just slip into the llange 5 ot' the head. When the gasket is placed in position and the closure is pnshed down into place, the gasket will be compressed.
In Fig. 8 the tlange o is shown as being ot' such length that it will extend but little below the npper edge ot the groove in the closure. ln this case thc gasket upon eX- panding will bulge out below the lower edge ot' the [lange 5, as shown in the drawing, amt thus hold the closure in position and at the same time absolutely seal the joint between the flange and the cylindrical p0rtion t3 ot the closure. To remove the Closure a sharp Ainstrument is inserted between the head 3 and the radial flange t) and the closure pried ont which usually results in destroying the gasket.
