To all whom it may concern:

. Beit known that I, WALTER W. WINsLow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laredo, in the county of Webb and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Blind-Slat Fastener, of which the following is a specification. i

The present invention relates to improvements in shutter attachments, and it has for its object to provide an improved device for firmly securing the pivoted slats forming the upper and lower panels of a shutter in any desired position of adjustment about their pivots in order that a proper degree of light may be admitted therethrough and rain may be excluded', a single device serving for both sets of slats, and the device being capable of adjustment in order that it may be thrown out of coperative relation with the slats,4 when desired.

To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements that will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the specification.

ln the accompanying drawingz-Figure l represents an inside view of an ordinary shutter provided with a slat retaining device'constructed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section of a portion thereof on an enlargedscale. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device removed from the shutter.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated throughout by similar characters of reference.

In the present embodiment of the invention, the device is shown in connection with a shutter of a well known form having sets of slats l and 2 pivoted to turn on horizontal axes in the shutter frame and having the usual strips 3 and 4 connecting them for simultaneous operation. The retaining device for the slats is mounted, in the present instance, on the usual cross piece 5, and arranged between the two sets of slats, and this device embodies, in the present instance, a resilient member 6 having a series of projections 7 and 8 arranged on the opposite ends thereof and offset laterally of the plane of the metal, the resilient member being preferably composed of fiat spring material. The resilient member is of such a length that it may be fastened to the cross piece 5 at an intermediate point, so that its ends willA extend beyond the pivotal center of the slat at each side of the cross piece in order that the projections thereon may coperate successively with the adjacent edge of the corresponding slat as the latter is turned about Specification of Letters Patent.

Any suitable means may be employed for securing the device to the shutter and it is preferable to attach it by means of a screw or nail 9 extending through an aperture l0 in an intermediate portion of the spring and extending into the cross piece 5 of the shutter frame, a washer ll. being interposed between the spring and the cross piece to separate the spring therefrom sufficiently to permit free operation, and it also provides for the turning movement of the spring, so that the latter may be readily adjusted into the position shown in dotted lines irr Fig. l, and when the spring is in this position, it will not coperate with the slats, that is to say, the latter may be operated freely as if the retaining device were not employed.

A device of the character described is very simple and cheap in its construction, and it may be applied to shutters of various forms by the application of a single nail or screw, and when in operative position, it serves to effectually hold the slats in any desired angular position although it will yield to a superior force tending to adjust them, and, should it be desirable at any time to discontinue the use of the retaining device for a while, this result could be obtained without the necessity of detaching it from the shutter.

What is claimed is:-

LA slat retaining device for window shutters embodying a resilient memher pivoted to turn in a plane parallel to the plane of the shutter frame and having projections at one end adapted to coperatie with adjacent slats of the shutter.

2. A slat retaining device for window shutters embodying a resilient member having sets of projections formed on its opposite ends and spaced longitudinally thereof, said projections being adapted to cooperate with the edges of the adjacent slats and connected respectively to the upper and lower sets, and means for pivoting the spring member at an intermediate point to the window shutter and permitting a turning movement thereof in a plane parallel to the plane of the shutter.
