FOLDING- STEEL SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1907.
Application filed July 19, 1906. Serial No- 326,888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN RooP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carnegie, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Steel Squares, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to squares and more particularly to folding steel squares, the object being to provide a square so constructed that it can be readily folded so that it can be easily carried or placed into a tool box.
Another object of my invention is to provide a square so constructed that the blade pivoted to the tongue is securely held at right angles to the tongue without any danger of it moving and one which is so constructed that the wear, it any, is taken up by the catch so that the square will be perfectly true at all times.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a side view of the square partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a side view of the square folded,
partly in section. Fig. 3 is a section taken on lines 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section taken on lines 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing A indicates a tohgue having a grooved angled end A provided with outwardly projecting apertured ears A A recess A is formed in the groove of the angled end, in which is pivoted a catch hook B, on a rivet B, which is provided with a lip B and a hooked end having a cam edge. A coil spring 0, mounted in a bore A, communicating with the recess A is adapted to bear against the catch. An
opening A is formed in one side leading into the recess over the lip on the catch so that the thumb can be inserted, so as to unlatch the catch when desired.
Pivoted between the apertured ears A on a rivet D, is an apertured ear E, of a blade E, which is provided with an angled end E adapted to fit in the grooved angled end A of the tongue. A notch E is formed in the angled end of the blade in which hooked ends of the catch B is adapted to fit and securely hold the blade at right angles to the tongue.
From the'foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a very novel and effective means for holding the blade at right angles to the tongue.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:.
1. The combination with a tongue having a grooved angled end provided with a recess having an opening leading out to one side, of a spring actuated pawl mounted in said recess provided with a lip under said opening, ears projecting out from said end of the tongue, :1 blade provided with an ear pivoted between said ears of the tongue and having a notched angled end adapted to fit in the groove and over the catch of the tongue for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a tongue provided with a grooved angled end having a recess formed in its bottom having an opening communicating therewith, leading out to one side, of ears projecting out from said end, a blade pivoted between said ears having a notched angled end adapted to fit in the groove of the tongue, and a spring actuated catch mounted in the recess of the groove adapted to engage said notch and provided with a lip on its side under the opening, leading into the recess, for the purpose described.
JOHN ROOP.
