Description

No. 866,532. v PATENTED SEPT. 1'7, 1907. B. A. STAIR.
SEWING THIMBLE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 13, 1905.

BLAINE A. STAIR, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 1'7, 190;?.
Application filed September-13, 1906. Serial No. 334,542.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, BLAINE ARTHUR STAIR, of the city of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Sewing-Thimbles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description or specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings and to the letters and figures marked thereon.
My invention relates to a certain new and useful iinproveinent in sewing thiinbles.
Upon the annexed sheet of drawings Figure l, is a front elevation ofV a thimble on an exaggerated scale, constructed according to my said invention, showing a cutter at the upper part oi the thimble. Fig. 2, is another elevation of the said thimble at right angles to Fig. l. Fig. 3, is a front elevation of my new or improved thiinble with the thread cutting device as applied to the lower part thereof. Fig. 4, is another elevation of Fig. 3, showing the cutter at right angles to the position of the cutter in Fig. 3. Fig. 5, is a front elevation of the th inible with my invention applied thereto as a double cutter. Fig. G, is another elevation corresponding to Fig. 5, and at right angles to Fig. 5.
In Figs. l, and 2, the cutter A, constructed in combination with the thimble is shown at the upper part of the thixnble. The cutter A, is fastened to the upper part of a bur punched outwardly from the interior to the exterior of the metal of the thimble by a manually operated punch, so that the metal forming the bur round about the outer part of the hole G, punched in the metal of the thimble, projects sufficiently far out wards on the exterior thereof, to enable a corresponding and preferably square hole O, in the lower part of the cutter A, to be passed over the bur, after which the bur is flattened over the upper part of and around the square hole O, in the cutter A. The cutter A, is formed as shown at Figs. l, and 2, of thin steel, bronze or equivalent metal which will maintain a sufliciently sharp edge so that it will cut thread when the thread is drawn against it as shown at Figs. l, and 2. The two* cuttingedges are marked D, and E, respectively, and the upper part of the cutter is bent outwards as shown especially at Fig. 2, to enable the thread to be easily caught by the hand of the operator upon the outwardly turned top of the cutter, andthen drawn down upon either of the cutting edges D, or E. Although the space between the cutter A, and the thimble F, is shown of exaggerated width in Fig. 2, it is to be understood that this exaggerated width is indicated upon the drawing for the purpose of showing that the upper part of the.
cutter A, is not fastened to the body of the thimble, but it constitutes a spring, which when the thread G, is drawn into or upon the' cutter, allows the thread Gr, to easily pass down through the yielding spring in the upper part4 of the cutter A.
In Figs. 3, and 4, the cutter A, is of precisely the same construction as that hereinbefore described with reference to Figs. l, and 2, and the operation thereof is also ,the same as that hereinbefore described With reference to Figs. l., and 2, therefore it is unnecessary to further describe Figs. 3, and 4, excepting to point out that the cutter A, is placed at the lower part of the thimble instead of at the upper part thereof.
The cutter shown in Figs. 5, and G, differs only from the cutter shown at Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4, in respect that the cutter is oi duplex construction, and consists ofthe upper and lower cutter respectively marked A, and A, and fastened to the thimble about the central part thereof by the bur around the square hole O, which bur being flattened by a pincer punch or otherwise flattened, holds the cutter firmly and conveniently in about a midway position on the side of the thimble.
I claim as my invention.
The thimble, combined with which is a double edged spring' cutter, said spring cutter being fastened to the thimble by means of a bur engaging with a hole in the spring cutter, the bur having its outer end attened for fastening the cutter to the thirnble, substantially as hereinbef'ore described.
In testimony whereof, I have 'hereunto set my hand and seal at the city of Los Angeles aforesaid, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
