ln the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 3 :md el, the spring clip is conveniently made in the form ol' e helix from spring Wire or the like, the moin portifm e of which encircles the body of the pencil and forme 'the slide by menno o which the clip is adjusted. The forward end of the helix is provided with a spring tongue f, which posses through the slot and engagesthe lead laterally. The rear end ol' the helix is turned downward through the slot to form-o heel g. engaging the rein" end of the leed, so that as the clip d is moved forward, the lead' is led along the bore by the heel g and is clamped in position by the spring tonguef.
