Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Sept. 17, 1907.
Application filed January 7,1907. Serial No. 351,211
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. FIELDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Liberty in the county of Morgan and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spurs; and I do declare the following to be a iull clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in spurs for saddle stirrups, which may be removably attached to a saddle stirrup and folded up and thrown out of use when desired.
The object of the invention is to provide a spur of simple and economical construction, which when folded out ol use will completely hide the rowel or spur wheel and prevent its snaggingthe boots or clothes of the rider.
In the accompanying drawiugs,Figure 1 represents an edge view of this improved spur in position on a saddle stirrup; Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof with the pivoted arm partly closed.
In the embodiment illustrated is shown a plate 1 provided with a series of longitudinally arranged perforations 2 ior the passage of screws 3 for removably securing said plate to a saddle stirrup 4.
The plate 1 is preferably provided at one end on one edge thereof with a laterally extending plate or shield 5, which is preierably formed integral with said plate and is offset therefrom at 5.
An arm 6 is pivotally connected at one end by a stud or other equivalent means to the end of said plate 1 near the end opposite to that on which the shield 5 is arranged. Said arm 6 has an enlarged bifurcated head 6 at its free end providing forks, between the lower ends of which is journaled a spur wheel or rowel 8.
The upper pivoted end of said arm 6 is of preferably semi-circular form, and has one edge cut away to provide a shoulder 9 which engages the lower end oi a flange or rib 10 formed on the outer face oi said plate 1 when the arm 6 is swung outward to its full extent. This shoulder 9 and flange 10 prevent the outward displacement of said arm after it has been swung into open position.
Should the use of a spur be undesirable the said arm 6 may be folded inwardly until said spur wheel 8 extends behind the plate or shield 5 and the thickened forked end or head of said arm engages the inner face of the shield 5 and is 'lrictionally held in closed position.
In the application of this spur it is preferably at tached to the right side of the left stirrup, but both stirrups may, if desired, be provided with spurs, and they may be attached thereto on any side or in any position found most advantageous.
I claim as my invention:
A spur comprising a plate for attachment to a stirrup having an offset laterally extending sliield at one end thereof, said plate being provided near its other end on its outer face with a stop flange, a spur arm pivotally connected at one end to said plate near its stop-carrying end and provided with a stop to coact with the stop of the plate to support the spur arm in extended position, said spur arm having a spur device at its free end and adapted to be turned on the plate and to bear on the ollfset of said shield to dispose its spur completely behind said shield whereby the clothes of the rider are protected. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
