UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH G. WHITTIER, OF ATTIOA, INDIANA.
SOLE AND UPPER PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,612, dated December 6, 1881.
Application filed June 27, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH G. WHITTIER, ofAttica, in the county of Fountain, andin the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sole and Upper Protectors 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andfto the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention has for its objects to provide a cheap and durable protector for boots and shoes, which can be readily applied, and which, when in place, will protect the sole as well as the upper at thetoe. These objects I attain by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portion of a shoe, showing my improved tip applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a detached top view of the protector, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of the same.
The letter A indicates the device, which is constructed of cast metal, of a configuration to fit neatly the exterior of the toe of the sole and upper of the boot or shoe. The said device, at its center, is provided on the inside with a short flange, B, and at each'side of the same with projections O, which are turned downwardly at their ends, so as to take into the sole when interposed between the same and the upper. The pegs or stitches are taken between the flange and projections, so as to firmly bind the protector in place, the outeredge of the same covering both the toe of the sole and the upper.
In some instances the protector may extend above the sole and embrace the toe of the upper alone, or, vice versa, it may extend downwardly and embrace only the sole, without departing from my invention, as I contemplate sometimes using this obvious construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The herein-described protector for boots and shoes, consisting of a metallic casting constructed to conform to the configuration of the toe of the sole and upper of a boot or shoe, protecting both, and provided with a series of projections intermediate the two edges, and formed with downwardly-extending spurs, adapting it to be secured between the sole and the upper, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 21st day of June, 1881.
JOSEPH Gr. WHITTIER.
Witnesses J OHN W. JOHNSON, G. W. MCDONALD.
