To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ORAN N. STALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hastings, in the county of Adams and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Plate-Glass Lil'ter, of which the following is a speciiication.

The invention relates to a plate glass lifter.

The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efiicicnt device for enabling heavy plates of glass and other material to be easily and conveniently handled, when the plates are in the boXes in which they are shipped and when removing the same therefrom, and also when setting the plates in position for use.

A further object oi the invention is to provide a device of this character, adapted to enable plate glass to be easily handled without breaking the same or cutting the persons handling the glass.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device adapted to enable either two or four men to lift, or otherwise handle a plate of glass.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawingz-Figure l is an elevation of a plate glass litter, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line x-x of Fig. 2.

l designates a substantially U-shaped frame or body, designed to be constructed of malleable metal, or other suitable material and provided at its ends with transversely alined cylindrical eyes 2, having interior screw threads and adapted to receive screws 3, carrying heads 4 at their inner ends for engaging a plate of glass, or other material at the opposite laces thereof. The U- shaped frame or body nia-y be of any preferred configuration, but it is preferably of au ornamental character, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing.

The heads 4, which may be constructed ot' any suitable material, are swiveled to the inner ends of adjusting screws 3, and are provided with Sockets 5 for the reception of inner smooth portions G of the said screws 3. The smooth portions G of the adjusting screws 3 are spaced from the side walls of the sockets 5, and they are secured to the inner end walls of the sockets by means oi' attachment screws G, which pierce the heads at the centers thereof. The attachment screws, which are counter-sunk in the heads 4, engage threaded bores or openings 3a, whereby the heads are secured to the inner ends of the adjusting screws. The heads of the attachment screws 6*l are flush with the faces of the heads 4. By swiveling the heads to the adjusting screws, the latter are adapted to turn independently of the heads and there will be no liability of cracking or breaking a glass while clamping the same.

The heads 4 are provided with yieldable faces 7, consisting preferably of disks of rubber, or other flexible or yieldable material, adapted to enable the clamping means to be tightly engaged with a plate ot glass without liability of breaking the same. The yieldable material may be secured to the heads by any suitable means, and the screws are provided at their outer ends with suitable handles 8, designed to be of a length to be conveniently gripped with one or both hands, so that either two or four persons may be employed for carrying a plate of glass.

The plate glass lifter may be made of different sizes to adapt it to the character of the work to be performed, and in handling a sheet of plate glass, two lifting devices are employed and are arranged at the front and rear edges or" the glass, which must be handled on edge to avoid breaking.

The plate glass lifter obviates the necessity of employing straps or frames for handling glass, and it may be engaged directly with the glass without liability of the same slipping, and it is also capable of handling boxes containing glass. The U-shaped frame or body enables the clamping means to engage a piece of glass a sufcient distance from the edge to handle the glass without danger of breaking the same.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,l

A plate glass lifter comprising a substantially U- shaped frame or body adapted t0 receive one edge of a plate ot' glass and havingl terminal interior-ly threaded eyes, screws extending through and projecting inwardly and outwardly from the eyes, handles carried by the outer ends of y the screws and arranged to extend from the opposite sides of the plate of glass, and heads carried by the inner ends ot' the screws and provided at their engaging faces with yieldable material.

2. A plate glass lifter comprising a substantially U- shaped frame or body adapted to receive a plate of glass and provided at opposite sides thereof with interiorly threaded eyes, adjusting screws extending through the eyes and provided at their inner ends with smooth portions havingl threaded bores, heads having sockets of greater diameter than the smooth portions of the adjusting screws, attachment screws piercing the heads and engaging the threads of the boi'es of the said adjusting screws and retaining the heads on the latter, said heads being swiveled to the adjusting screws to permit the latter to rotate independently of them to avoid breaking the glass, and handles carried by the outer ends of the screws and arranged to extend from opposite sides of the l0 ends of' the screws and provided at their engaging faces with yieldable material, said heads being swiveled on the' screws.
