OJA. BURNES. v HOLDER FOR JARS, CANS, 6m. N0. 575,694. Patented Jan. Z6,-1 897.

OLIVER A. BURNES, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
HOLDER FOR JARS, CANS, etc.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,694, dated January 26, 1897.
Application filed May 4, 1896. Serial No. 590,127. (No modeLl To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER A. BURNEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Jars,
Cans, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and efficient device for holding and handling jars, cans, &c.
To this end my invention consists of a removable handle or holder which is made adjustable, so that it may be applied to jars, &c., of various sizes.
My invention also comprises certain novel details of construction hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
The preferred form of myinvention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein, like letters referring to like parts throughout the several views-- Figure l is a plan view showing my im-- proved handle or holder applied in working position on a jar or can, said jar or can being indicated in diagram and some parts of the holder being broken away. Fig. 2 is an end View of the handle or holder shown in Fig. 1, looking at the head of the same; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line X X of Fig. 1, looking from the head end of the holder.
a. indicates a jar or can in diagram.
Referring to the parts of the holder, Z) indicates a hollow cylindrical handpiece provided at its innermost end with a flange portion I).
0 indicates a clamping-head which is provided with a screw-threaded stem or rod portion 0', the threads of which work in suitable internal threads cut in the interior of the flanged portion 1) of the handpiece 1). As shown, the clamping-head is formed on an arc of a circle and is provided with a facing 0 of leather or other pliable material. The clamping-head c is provided at each end with a perforation c and the facing a is provided at its ends with perforations 0 which coinferent sizes and forms.
cide or register one with each of said perforations 0 f indicates a draw-plate which is loosely swiveled at its central portion on the exterior of the handpiece 2) and is held from movement in the direction of the clamping-head c by means of the collar Z).
g indicates a clamping-loop formed by a strand of pliable wire, the ends of which work through the coincident perforations 0 0 respectively, of the clamping-head c and facing c and are secured one to the opposite ends of the draw-plate f, as shown at g.
The device is placed in working position by applying the outer loop portion of the clamping-wire 9 around the can or jar which is to be held, and the clamping-head c is forced outward against said can or jar simply by turning the handpiece 6. Obviously as the clamping-head c is thus forced outward against the can or jar the clamping-wire 9 will be drawn through the perforations 0 c and the outer loop portion of said wire will be contracted and tightly drawn against the periphery or exterior of the Vessel to which it is applied.
By extending the clamping-head c a greater or less distance from the handpiece 1) the loop formed by the wire 9 may be varied, so as to adapt the device, within certain limits, of course, to vessels and other articles of dif- This removable handle or holder is adapted for many uses, of which I shall attempt to name only a few.
The device may be applied to ordinary glass fruit-jars. When so applied, these jars, together with the handle, may be used as a dipper. Again, when thus' applied the jar may be firmly held, so that the top thereof may be tightly screwed thereon. When the device is applied, for example, to an ordinary fruit-can, the can may be securely held from rotary and other movement while the top of the same is being removed by a can-opener.
It will be understood, of course, that the purpose of the leather facing c of the clamping-head c is to prevent the defacing of the vessel to which the device is applied, and also to give greater slipping friction to said clamping-head.
It will also be understood that various alterations in the details of construction of the device above described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1. The combination with a handpiece, of a draw plate or piece swiveled on said handpieee, a Wire loop the ends of which are secured to said draw-plate, and a clampinghead provided with perforations through which the end portions of said wire loop Work, and having a fixed stem which Works with screw-threaded engagement into said handpiece, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the handpiece Z) E. F. ELnoRE, F. D. MEROHANT.
