Description

PATBNTB AUG. I27, 1907.' W. 0. PIERCE.
COLLAR.
APPLIGATION FILED JAN.16.1907.
1 UNITED STATES PAT'NT-"ionmon WILLIAM O. PIERCE,OF PLACERVILLE, GALIFRNIA.
To all whom 'it may conm.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, residingat Placerville, in the county of Eldorado and State of California, have invented ce1'- 5 tain new and useful Improvements in Collars; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
-This invention relates to improvements in the construction of collars and particularly for the purpose of designing a collar which is novel in exterior appearance and also which iscapableof having attacheck thereto '-7.4 ties of special design.
" In carrying out the invention, l do not wish to restrict myself to the exact details illustrated and described, but for the purpose of disclosure I have shown in the accompanying drawings a practical embodiment y A of the invention, in which like letters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view in rear elevation with the collar E unfolded and one form of readily slipping tie attached i f thereto. lFig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. 1, but showing ,the adaptation of collar for having another form of tie 5` attached thereto, and Fig. 3 is a view infront elevation of the collar, the position of the tabs or flaps forming a part of the invention, being shown folded up between the collar proper and the turned down portion, as indicated by dotted lines.
0 1 designates the body portion of the collar proper, 2 a roll or turned over portion thereon, and 3 wings, the collar being designed to have the effect of both a turned down and wing collar combined, the turned down portion being designed to hide the attachment of tie to 5. collar.
The body portion 1 of the collar proper is provided .ewith the usual end and real button holes, but on its ower edge is also provided with suitable tabs or flaps which may be formed integral and as a continuation 0` of the lower edge of the collar. These tabs or flaps 4 are "provided with the button holes 5 and 6 designed for 1 use with the different forms ofties, as hereinafter described.
particular invention, for the purpose of setting forth the utility of the invention, a short description of the ties in their connection with the collar follows. It is very desirable, both from the point of saving material and also to enable the tie to slip readily through the collar, to provide an intermediate member between two end pieces of a tie, which intermediate member has little friction and therefore slides readily around the collar. A In the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, 7 designates the end members of the tie, and 8 an intermediate strip 'Specification-of Letters Patent.
While the ties themselves do not form a part of this'A of non-extensible but flexible material, such as whale.

bone or metal, which is provided at its ends with hook portions 9 adapted to engage eyelets or loop members 10 on the ends oi the ties, and after being hooked to these eyelets or loop members, the ends of the hook members 9 are designed to be held locked to the eyelets l0 by means of slides l1 mounted 011 the intermediate member 8 and adapted to slide over the ends of the hooks 9.
It will be seen, referring to Fig. l, that in the tie employed one of the hook members 9 may first be reeved through an eyelet 10 on one end member, and the portion 8 then passed through the vertical button hole 6 of one flap or tab e, thence through the vertical button hole 6 ofthe other tab or flap and then secured by means l 'I of the hook 9 at the opposite end of the member 8 to the eyelet 10 on the other end Inember of the tie. It will thus be seen that the vertical button hole 6 lying on the inner edges of the tabs or flapsli will allow oi a longitudinal movement of the intermediate member 8 around the collar, a considerable play being allowed for.
In the construction shown in Fig. 2 where the intermediate member 8 of the tie is dispensed withfthe ends of the ties 71 are provided with spaced tabs 12, one tab of each pair of spaced tabs being adapted to be disposed on opposite sides oi the ilaps or tabs 4 and secured thereto by means of a suitable button passing through button holes in the spaced tabs and the horizontal button holes 5 in the flaps, which holds the end of tie to a given point out of sight.
It will be noted that by aflixing the ends of the ties f for the collar, as is often the case with bow ties, if desirable, the spaced tabs Inay be secured through the button holes G and thus the tie ends may be adjustable `to suit the collar.
In both of these con struct-ions, when the tie has been secured in position on the flaps 4, these flaps are designed to be folded upwardly between the body portion l of the collar and the turned down portion 2, as
indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and used to support providedwith a threading pin 14 anda button hole 15 adapted to be secured to a suitable button 16 on the shirt. In securing this fastening means, the threaded tape 13 is first passed through a button hole in the shirt band, thence through the rear button hole of the collar,
and thence passed downwardly, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and secured by means of the button hole l5 to the button 16 on the shirt. i
I i 1 l Having thus described my invention, what I claim 1. A turned down collarn provided on its lower edge with tabs adapted to be folded between the turn down and body portion proper of the collar and held therebetween unsecured at their free ends, and means cooperating to secure a tie to said tabs, comprising button holes formed in said tabs, substantiallwY as described.
2. A collar provided on its lower edge with integral folding tabs disposed on opposite sides of the center of said collar and each of said tabs being provided with a plurality of button holes, substantially as described.
3. A turned down collar provided on its lower edge with integral tabs adapted to be folded between the body WILLIAM O. PIERCE.
