FIREPROOFING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 3, 1907. Serial No. 371,565.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR KAHNWEILER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproofing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fireproofing devices and more particularly to devices for protecting life lines, which are used in connection with Lyle guns and has for its object to protect that portion of the line which is secured to the projectile against the flash oi the powder when the gun is fired.
My invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a Lyle gun with the projectile in position and my improvement applied to the line; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of the line with my device in position thereon, and Fig. 3 is a cross section thereof on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
A. is the gun which is of the usual kind known as a Lyle gun provided with trunnions B. These trunnions B. are mounted in bearings O. which are secured to thecarriage D. The gun is fired in the customary manner by means of a primerand a lanyard.
E. is the projectile, which is made of cast iron or similar metal and is provided with an eye F. to which the end of the line G. is secured. The line G. may be carried by a reel or a faking box, or it may be faked in loose loops or coils to one side of the gun. To prevent the flash of the powder, when the gun is fired,
from burning the line where it is attached to the projectile, I provide the line for a portion of thedistance from its attaching end with a protecting sleeve or stocking H. This sleeve H fits the line loosely and is prevented from leaving the said line by the knot I. The said sleeve H may be made of asbestos or other non-combustible material or of a material which has been treated with a fire-proofing solution.
In using the line, the sleeve H is run up to the knot I and then tied through the eye F so that said sleeve extends down a portion of the line. The line is thus protected at the eye of the projectile and for a portion of its length against the flash oi the powder and the danger of the line being burned when the gun is fired and of the apparatus being rendered in effective is obviated. If desired instead of providing the non-combustible covering the line itself may be treated with a fire proofing solution.
I claim:
1. A life line for use in connection with line-throwing guns, said line being provided with a knot at one end, and a fire proof protecting sleeve surrounding the end portion of the line and held by said knot against separation from the line.
2. A life line for use in connection with line-throwing guns. and a fire proof sleeve for protecting one end of said line against being burned by the flash of the powder.
3. A life line for use in connection with line throwing guns and a covering of fireproof material surrounding the end portion of said line, and connected with the pro jectile.
