WILLIAM S. KIMBALL, OF RQCHESTER, NW YORK.
Lette/rs Patent No. 86,415, dated Februa/ry 2, 1869.
IMPROVED TOBACCO-PRESS.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIA M S. KiMBALL, of the city of Rochester, in the State of New York, have invented a. new and useful Tobacco-Press; and I do hereby declaire that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vert-ical section.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the clamp and lillingmoulds.
Figure 3 is a top view of bags rest while being filled.
rIhe nature of my invention will be understood from the drawings and specifications.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
. On a suitable frame, A, forming a base, I erect two standards, B, which are connected, at their tops, by a cross-bar, C.
0u the inside of each standard B there are attached guides, a.
I tit a cross-head, D, between the standards, having a gr.:ove in each end, to receive the guides a, which retain it in its vertical movement.
The cross-heac'l is operated by a toggle-jointed lever, E, which is pivoted,at-oue end, to the cross-head D, as shown atc, and sustained by suitable braces, extending from the top to the lower part of the lever, nearly to the ends of the cross-head. The other lend of the lever is pivoted to the cross-bar C.
To the joint of the lever E, a shaft, f, is pivoted, which may either be operated by hand, or driven back and forward by power which will give a vertical motion platform?, on which the 'to the cross-head D.
To this cross-head D, I attach, by hinges, a piece of wood or metal, R,Vwhich forms an adjustable dischargebar, when turned down as shown in dotted lines in iig. 1,and when not used, is held up by a spring, x, as shown in full lines, iig. 1'.
On the frame A, I place a platform, P, figs. l and 3, that has openings, b, figs. 1 and 3, in the side, under the discharge-bar R, that receives the filling-mould H, when it is desired to press the bags off them.
In iig. 2, the arrangement of a clamp, G, is shown, which is formed lof two pieces of wood or metal, held together by the screw (l. In the ends of the clamp, holes of any desired shape, to suit the shape of the bag to be filled, are made. In the holes I iit metal filling-moulds, H, that extend to the bottom, or nearly7 so, of the bag, as shown in figs. 1 and 2.
In the lilling-moulds I fit plungers, o, that operate on the material to be pressed, by the downwardV movement of the cross-head D. The clamp G must be placed atthe bottom of' the filling-moulds, or nearly so, to sustain them while the material is being pressed.
The object of my invention is to make a press for filling tobacco, hops, &c., in bales or bags.
The operation is as follows:
The lling-moulds H are put into the bags, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. They are then put into the clamps G, as shown in 2, and placed on the platform P, as shown in full lines, 1i g. 1, under the cross-head D. The cross-head D is caused to move vertically, by a horizontal reciprocating motion being given to the rod or shaft j'. As the cross-head D 'moves downward, it forces the plunger e on the material in the bags, and presses it, and the clamp G prevents the moulds and bags from bursting. After the material is suiiciently pressed, the clamp and moulds are moved forward until the moulds may settle down into the openings b, as
shown in dot-ted lines, iig. l. The screw d is slackened, the discharge-bar R is turned down, as shown in dotted lines, iig. l. The cross-head, in its downward motion, discharges the bag, with its filling, from the mould, by pressing on the plungers e.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the toggle-jointed lever E and cross-head D, in combination with the adjustable discharge-bar R, the plunger o, clamp G, and the llingmoulds H, all acting conj ointlypas and for the purposes set forth.
