Description

H. A. cRossLEY,l or
"CLEVELAND, oHIo.
Letters Patent No. 95,774, dated October 12, 1869.
w 'mpRovEMENT IN sTAvEJoINTER.
The Schedule referred to in thele Letters Patent and making part of the .a1-ne.
To all whom 'it may conce/m Be it known that I, H. A. GnossLEY, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain Y new and useful Improvements in Stave-Jointers; 'and`I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Eigure l is a front view.
Figure 2 is a vert-ical section.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts.
' The nature of this invention relates to an adjustable frame or table, for holding and supporting the s'tave to be jointed, together with the devices for adjusting said frame and the wheel planer, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings- A represents a frame, of suitable form and dimensions.
lo the upper cross-beam of this frame is secured the jointer-wheel B, the face of which is formed asI shown in g. 2, and provided with the cutters B', more or less, as `may be desired.
At the front of the frame, and near the lower side ofthe wheel, is hung, to the lugs secured on the ends of the frame A, the frame or table C.
At each end of this frame is the head-blocks D, to which are connected rods a, that passy down belowr the frame, a coiled spring, b,'passing round each rod, in-
' side of the frame, which will be referred to hereafter.
E Il are adjustable rests, provided with two shoulders c c', fig. 2, and are secured to the frame C, one
near each end.
F is also an adjustable rest, xed to the centre of the frame, on the face of which rests the stave to be jointed, the rest heilig adjusted hy means of the screw and nut d, fig. 2.
The object of these rests isto adjust the frame, so that any-sized stave may he jointed. If narrow, the rest F is in the position shown, the stave resting on the face of said rest, and the edge of the stave comin gagainst the lower shoulder c. flhus the stave is kept in place against the wheel, and is also held to the frame by means of the head-blocks D, which are drawn down on the ends of the stave; and if the stave should be twistingor irregular, the ends are held firmly, thus securing the stave in a curved but true position, the centre of the stave supported by means of the rest F, the head-blocks being operated in the following manner: Y
In, the lower part ofthe frame A is the treadle' (J, which is secured tothe shaft H, having its bearings in the lugs I, securedto the base.
Ou the ends of the shatt that project through the lugs, are the arms J, from which extend up the rods a', that connect with rods a attached to the headblocks.
The frame C has a rocking motion, and will, of its own weight, lean from the wheel after the stave is placed in position. By pressing the foot on the treadle, it will, by means of the connecting-'rods a a', draw the head-blocks into the stave, and also draw the frame C into posit-iron against the wheel, Iand when the pressure on the treadle is removed, the frame will drop back, and the spiings b, referred to, throw the headblocks up; then the stave may be removed, and an-` other take its place, the wheel B being operated by any suitable power.
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Theswinging frame C, provided with clamps D a, D a, operated by means ofthe rock-shaft H, J J and treadle G, through the medium of the connection a a', and ,when provided with springs I) whereby the clamps are rendered selireleasiug, all arranged substantiall as herein described.
H. A. (lROSSLEY.
