To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J. B. ANDREWS, of Bridgeton Centre, in the countyv of Cumberland, and State lof Maine, have invented a new and useful Improved Saw-Horse; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and 'exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- A is a side sectional elevation.

I am aware that a patent 4has been granted for a saw-horse, having ajdevice to hold the wood while being sawed, but my invention is different in appliances fromthat; and consists of a device to hold the wood securely, and ofV another to receive the saw as soon as a stick is cut.

Attached to the pedal c is the arm h., pivoted at i and j.

Set into the cross-bar o, midway between the two pairs of cross-legs of the horse, is the upright toothed arm k.

Now, as the foot is pressed upon the pedal e, this arm it is ,drawn down toward the cross-bar m of the horse, so as to seize and hold apiece of wood placed on the same to be sawed,

When the pressure ofthe foot is withdrawn from e, k will again resume the position shown-in the drawing.

This arm k is in the centre of the horse, half way between the legs. The `advantage of this is, that if the wood is caught by the saw, 'It does not li directly up on the foot placed on the pedal-c, as would be the case if k has a vertical movement up and down, as inv patent 31,605, May 5, 1861, before referred to, but the strain comes, in this case, on the bar c, to which k is attached, because k moves oifrom and on the wood laterally. This makes it easier to hold the wood to be sawed,and is what I claim 'for my improvement in holding the wood.

The patent No. 31,605, March 5, 1861, to which I have referred above, gives a vertical movement'to the hook to hold the wood. I do not claim a hook, or the movement of any spring to operate the pedal.

I do not, claim the application of a pedal, with hook and spring, attached to a saw-house,v as in patent of George Ives, No. 31,605, March 5, 1861;^ Neither do I claim jaws provided/with teeth, and a sliding. frame between the jaws, and a treadle to operate the device;` patent ef E. Whittemore, No. 38,351, April 28,1863.

Neither do I claimA the jaw-frames, each composed of f twobars, united together by cross-bars at their lower ends, and one frame within the other, to form a folding horse; patent of E. Whittemo're, February 9, 1864.

Operating the clamping-device' by pedals is not new, and I-do not claim that, for it is common to the abovecited patents; but my application relates to the .arrangement of arm k, rod h,and pedal e, so that the wood, when lifted up by the saw, does not draw upward directly on the pedal, and thus require the exer- 4tioncf strength to keep the wood in position. The

woodis, when lifted by the saw, drawn vertically, but the movement of k is olf laterally, so that the disturbance of the wood by the saw has but little' tendency to throw up k; but

What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The arrangement of pedal e, rod h, V-spring f, and toothed arm k, on a saw-horse, in connection. with the fixed teeth n and rest o, for the purpose of easily holding the saw and wood to be sawed, the whole operating as herein setl forth.
