Be it known that we, THOMAS WALSH, Jone: WALSH,.nnd Davin EVANS, of Brownsville, in the county of Fayette, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Brick Machine; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable thoseskillecl in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin'g part of this specification, in which I Figure 1, Sheet No. 1, is a. side view of my invention.

This invention relates to a new and improved machine for pressing and moulding bricks, and it consists in a novel construction and urrangement of parts operating as hereinafter fully shown'and described, whereby a m compact, strong, and durable machine for the purpose specified is obtained, and one which will perform the work expeditiously with but a moderate application of power. I v I A represents a horizontal bed or platform, supported at a suitable height by legs a, and having uponit an upright framing, B, in which a horizontal driving-shaft, C, is placed, having. a crank, D, at oneend, and a pinion, E, upon it near the crank. On said shaft C, at about the centre of the width -of-the framing B, there is keyed a cam, F, which works within a yoke, G; avertical guide-rod, H, being at the top of tho yoke, and which works through a cross-bar, b, at the upper part of the framing B. To the lower end of the yoke a plunger, I, is attached, which works in a box for chamber, J, in the lower part of the framing B. At two opposite sides of this box or chamber J there are attached hoppers K K, in which horizontal rotating shafts L L are placed, said shafts having radial pins 0 attached. The lower parts of these hoppers communicatewith the box or chamber J by means of openingsd, which are just below the shafts L 'L, and in each of these openingsa slide, M, works, one slide only being shown. The outer ends of these slides are slotted longitudinally, as shown at a, and in said slots the upper ends of rods f are fitted, the latter being attached to a slide, N, fitted in the bed or platform A, and working over an opening, 9, therein. This slide N has two sets of these openings]: in it, one set at its centre and the other set near one. end, and an opening, 1', is also made in the slide, the use of which will presently be shown. The slide N has a reciprocating motion imparted to it by means of a cam, O, workingin a yoke, 1, attached to the slide, the cam being on a shaft, Q, which has a wheel, R, upon it, the latter gearing into a wheel, S, which gears into the pinion E on shaft C. The upper end of the'plunger I has arms j projecting obliquely from it, each arm having a pendent bar, K, attached to the lower ends of wh'mh plunger-bars T are secured, each plunger bar having three plunger-s, I, attached, to work into the-openings h, which serve as moulds. The chamber J, in which the plunger I works, has two vertical grooves, n n, in it, and the chamber J is provided with two vortical partitions, o o, as shown clearly in fig. 5, and when the plunger I descends the grooves n '12. receive 'the partitions o o, andadmit of the plunger passingdown to the bottom of the chamber. The compartments 1;, formed by the partitions o 0, correspond to the openings 11. in the slide N, so that at the termination of each movement of the slide, one of the sets ofopenings it will be at the bottom of and in line with the compartments p. The rotary shnftsL are driven by bolts q from the shaft 0.
The o eration is as follows: The power is applied to the shaft 0, and the clay, properly moistened, is thrown into the hoppers K K, and tempered by the action of the pins 0 of the shafts L. The slides M force the requi site quantity of clay into the chamber J, each compartment p rcceivinga quantity'rcquisite to fill an opening, h, in the slide N, and when the plunger I descends this clay is forced into the openings Ii at the bottom of the compartments p, and the clay is compressed therein. As the plunger I rises the slide N is moved by the cam 0 so as to draw the filled openings or moulds it out from underneath the chamber J, and in line with the plungers I at one side of the chamber J. When the plunger I again descends, the plungers I over the filled moulds o1 openings 7; also descend, and force the clay out of the moulds, while the plunger I is pressing the clay'into the other set of'moulds or openings h, which meet the bottom of the compartments in J. The slides M m moved so as to force the clay into the ehamber'Jjust previous to eneh descent of the plunger I, so as to insure the mouldsbeing filled with clay at each descent of plunger I. The opening a in the slide N is to receive the plungers let the side of the chamber J towards the yoke I when the moulds it, out of which said plungers I force the clay, are under thecompartments p of J, and are having the clay pressed into them by plhnger I. The plungers I ll, it will be seen, are operated by the cam F. The machine is very compact, and performs its work very expeditiously and in a. perfect manner.
Having thus described our invention, we ohiim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pateat- 1. The slotted or grooved plunger I, working in the chamber J, provided with the'partitions o, in combination with the plungers lend the slide N, provided with the moulds It, all arranged to operate substantially in themsnner as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The slides M, working through the hoppers K K and in openings cl inthe sides of the chamber J, in eombinutionfwith the rotary shaft-s L, provided with the pins 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination and arrangement of theleeiproeeting slide N provided with the openings or moulds It, the plungors I Z Z, chombef J, slides M, and hoppers K K, provided with the rotary shafts L, having pins c attached, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
