Description
@M-.2? ,gieten at-nt @fitta LEWIS M. VANSICKLIL,l OF WOODBRDGE, ANEW JERSEY.
Lam Patent No. 78,343, ma May. 2e, 1868.
IMPROVED BRIGK-MAGHINR TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I
Be it known that LLEWIs M. VAN SIcKLE,'of Woodbridge, in the countylof Middlesex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Brick-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and'exact description thereof, which will enable-those skilled in the art -to make and use the same, refer encebeing had to the accompanying drawings forming partof thisv s pecication.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for moulding and pressing bricks, tile, &c., t'c., and it consists in a new and improved construction ofthe Scrapers ofthe mud-mill, whereby the Scrapers are rendered less liable to break than those o f ordinary construction.
The invention also consists in a peculiar mechanism for moulding, pressing, and discharging the bricks, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby said work may be rapidly performed, and in a perfect manner.`
n the accompanying sheet of drawings-v Figurel is a side view of my invention, partly in section.
Figure 2, a bottom view ofthe same.
Figure 3, a detached view of the Scrapers pertaining to the mud-mill.
Similar letters of reference indicate'eorresponding parts A A represents n. rectangular bok, built within a suitable'framing, B, and having'a vertical shaft, C, fitted centrally in it.
On the upper cud of said shaft there is a sweep, D, to which a horse is `attached for rotating the shaft.
. This shaft is provided as usualwith lateral arms or blades, (not represented,) for tempering. the clay, and on the lower part of said shaft, just above the bottom, a, of the press-box, there is fitted a scraper, E, which may be of cast iron, and is composed of ahub, b, having four curved arms, e, the'convex sides of which are the face sides, and act upon the clay, and `have flanges d'to give a. broad surface, so'asto press or force thesame through apertures dx, at two opposite sides of the box A, into press-boxes e e.
These press-boxes are each provided with a grating,f, at its bottom, and' these gratings are formed into pendent plates g, which constitute the moulds, the front ends and bottoms ofthe moulds being open.
In each press-box e, a plunger, F, is fitted, and allowed to work freely up and down.
These plungers are each connected, by uprightsh, to a horizontal bar, z', the ends of which passthrougli oblong vertical slots j, in the corner-posts 7c of the framing B, (see fig. 1,) and the ends of these bars 2' areeonnected by links Z to the ends of a bar, F', at each side of the framing B, said bars beingpivoted centrallyto the framing, and each bar provided with central pendent bar, G, the lower endsof the bars G being fitted in a slid'- ing frame, H, underneath the box A, said frame having a. reciprocating movementxgiven it from the shaft 0,' by means of a'cra-nk, I, at the lower end of said shaft, working in slotted arms J J, attached to the frame H, (see g. 2.)
By this means the plungers F are worked up and down.
The reciprocating frame has dischargers or bars m attached toits ends in line with the moulds er spaces between the pendent plates'g, and directly in -front of each press-box e there is a rising and fallinggate, K.
These gates are attached to vertical bars n n, the upper ends of which are connected by cross-pieces o o, each cross-piece having au'l upright, p, framed ,centrallyrl into it, and each upright having a friction-roller, g, in its upper end.V l
These uprights are alternately depressed, and the gates K forced down by Aa, bevelled surface at the under side of the sweep passing ove).` them, one gate K rising as'the other falls, inrcon'sequenceof the ends of the crosse. Ipieces o 0 being connected to'bars L L, pivoted to opposite sides of the box A.
The parts are so arranged that when a. plunger, F, descends, the dischargers m are drawn back from between the pendent plates g, and the gate Kin front pressed down, and a bottom-board, M, being underneath the plates,
the plunger F, in descending, compresses the clay in the moulds` When the plunger F has reached its lowest point of descent, the gate Kcommences to rise, andwhen fully up, the dischargers m move forward and discharge4 the bricks from tile moulds, and at the same time shove forwardthe board with them, an empty board placed behind the-one with the bricks upon it, being at the sama time shovdundernenth the moulds. A i n By this arrangement the bricks will beperfeotly moulded, and in :L very rapid manner.
lhe same apparatus will answer for moulding tiles, by employing moulds of a. suitable kind.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersvPatent-f 1. .The operating of thevplun'gers F, from thovertical shaft C, through the medium of the slotted arms JJ, the reciprocating frame H,lmrs GFQoonnectod with the bars z', fitted in tho frnningB, and having the plungers F nttached to them, substantially in the manner as und for the purpose specified.`
2. The gates K K, operated as shown, in' combinution with the'discharg'ers-m, und theV plungersF, all arranged s o as to be operated from the shaft C, in the manner substantially as and for the purpose specified.
