IMPROVED BRICK-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,703, dated July 3l, 1866.
To all 'whom it 'may concern.-
Be it known that I, E. I). H. OAPRON, of Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Brick-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will en able those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my invention taken in the line m x, Fig. 2 Fig. 2, a horizontal section of Vthe same taken in the line y y, Fig. l; Fig. 3, a detached vertical Vsection of one of the followers of a mold taken in the line z z, Fig. 4; Fig. 4, a plan or top view of a follower-lid.

This invention relates to a new andimproved brick-machine of that class in which a horizontal Inold-wheel is employed; and it consists in a novel arrangement of a mold-wheel, pugmill, and mold-filling device, together with certain means for re-pressing the clay in the l molds and discharging the molded clay therefrom, as hereinafter fully shown and described.
A represents a framing, which may be constructed in any proper manner to support the working parts; and Bis a vessel, of cylindrical or other proper form, fitted in said framing and having a shaft, C, passing vertically through it, on which shaft, within the vessel B, arms a are attached, of any suitable form for pulverizing and tempering the clay.
The lower part of the vessel B lcommunicates, by means of an opening, b, with a rectangular chamber, D, within which a plunger, E, is tted and allowed to work freely up and down. This plunger is connected by a rod, F, with a crank, Gr, at one end of a horizontal shaft, H, which shaft has a pinion, I, upon it. The pinion I gears into a wheel, J, on the shaft O1, to the upper part of which the power is app ied.
K represents a horizontal wheel, on the periphery of which there are secured teeth c, into which a toothed Wheel, L, on the lower part of the shaft C, gears. This wheel L is not toothed entirely around, lout has two smooth places, d d, upon it, as shown in Fig. 2, which followers are raised and lowered and retained at proper intervals in an elevated and depressed state during the molding process.
The followers N do not descend within the molds by theirown gravity, T-shaped pendants f being attached to the bottom of each follower, which catch under flanges g on the guides and cause the followers to be drawn down at the proper time. (See more particularly Fig. 2.) The followers are also provided with hinged lids h, the outer surfaces of which are covered with cloth secured by metal strips i, nailed or screwed down over the cloth at each ed ge of the lid. This cloth prevents the clay from sticking to the follower. The office of the hinged lids is to discharge the pressed clay from the molds out upon the top of the wheel K, which is effected by means of a rod,
y j, passing vertically through the followers and connected at its upper end to a lever, k, (see Fig. 3,) which acts upon or against the lid, the rod j being operated by an incline, lc', in the same manner as the followers are operated, and
the lower end of rod j provided with a T- shaped lower end, l, to catch under a flange, m, on the incline 7c.
On the upper surface of the wheel K there are hinged flaps O, one in line with each opening ormold M. These lla-ps are operated, raised, and lowered by meansof sliding rods nu', which work on ways o, underneath the wheel K, the rods n raising the flaps and the rods a forcing them down over the molds. The operation of' these will be fully understood by referring to Fig. l.
P is .a roller which has its bearings in an arm, Q, projecting over wheel K.
The operation is follows: The shaft O is rotated by any convenient power, and the clay,
properly moistened, is thrown into the vessel B, where it is ground and properly tempered by the revolution of the arms a. The tempered clay passes from the vessel B, through the opening b, into chamber D, each time the plunger E rises, the plunger having a side piece, p, attached to it, which closes said opening when the plunger is down. The plunger E is forced down each time a mold, M, passes underneath the chamber D, the wheel K stopping each time a mold passes underneath the chamber, in consequence of a smooth portion, d, of the wheel G coming opposite the teeth c ofthe wheel L. The followers N of the molds are drawn down by means of T-shaped pendants f catching un der the flanges g of the ways e, and the hinged lids h are also thrown or brought down previous to the molds passing under chamber D, and the molds are filled by the descent of the plunger E, and the followers are kept down after the'lled molds pass from underneath the chamber D in consequence of resting or traveling over a de- 'pressed portion of the ways e, and while in this depressed position they pass underneath the roller P and the clay re-pressed or compacted within the molds. The flaps O are thrown down by the rods n', over the molds, previous to the latter passing underneath the roller P, the latter bearin g upon the naps, which are raised after they have passed from underneath the roller by the rods n.
The efciency of the roller P may be augmented materially by having the ways e slightly raised at the point where the molds pass under roller P.
The followersN are raised by passing up inclines on the ways e, and the followers are gradually raised, so as'to elevate the lids h above the upper surface of wheel K, and when the lids h are fully elevated the T-shaped lower end of the rod j will catch under the flange m of the incline 7c', and the lids will be raised or thrown up by the levers lc, and the pressed clay discharged upon the upper surface of the wheel K.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the pressure-roller P with iap O.

3. With the follower N, the combination of the rod j, when the latter is provided with an articulated lever, K, at its upper end to raise the lid, the whole being constructed and arranged as described.
