Description

PATENTED Ea'flees WXMMV. n

EEHEAIM R. GREEN AND HENRY D. PHILLIPS; JR., OETEENTONNEW JERSEY.
lLettere Patent No.' 74,079, dated February 4, 1868.
manovrav BEIGE-moms,
To ALL wnoM IT MAY coNoEEN:
Be it known that we, Eenrum R. 4'GniEEN and HENnrQePsILnIPs, .Ir-L, of Trenton, in the countyof Mercer, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved lBrick-Machine#'and we' do hereby declare that tlie following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled .in thcjart to make and use the same,`referen'ee being had 4to the accompanying drawings, forming 'part df, this specification. This invention relates to a new and improved machine for pressing and moulding' brick,^a rid'it cons-iets in a novel manner of operating the plungcrs by which the clay is forced into the moulds, and in a novel manner of operating the moulds, feedingthem underneath the press-boxes, as hereinafterA fully shetvn and described, whereby several advantages are obtained, as will be hereinafter fully setforth; In the accompanying' sheet of drawingsy 1 Figure. 1, Sheet 'No. 41, is an elevation c f our invention.v 4
Figure 2, a vertical section of the same, taken in the line z'z,.g. `3. Figure 3, Sheet No. 2, a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line yy,g. l; Figure 4,-a vertical ,section of the same, taken in the line z z, iig. 3. Similar'letters o'f reference ,indicate corresponding parte.
A represents a quadrilateral bn'zr. in whichfajertical shaftf-B, isjitted. centrally,and progided lateral,y
arms, a, which, as'the shaft B is' rotated, temper or thoroughly mix the moisteued clay inbox4 A.,' This part of.- the machine, which is' inV common use and well known, is commonly termed the mud-mill. To the shaft B,
just 'above the bottom I of the mud-mill, there are secured'two Scrapers, e, which, as lshaft B rotates, foro e'out 'the tempered clay through apertures d, inthe lower parte of the sides' of box A into press-bosch O, there beingl one at each side of. Each of these apertures is provided with a gate, D, to thewupper ends o f which levers EV are attached, one to each, for the purpose of raising and lowering the gates to regulate the admissin of clay into4 the press-boxes according to the amount required to suit th sizeof the moulds. In each press-bo; there is fitted a plunger, F,"to jwhich rods G are connected by pivots e. The upper ends of these rods G have pins, j; projecting laterally from them, and these pins fit in heart-shaped grooves, g, inthe outer sides of wheels h,
which are on the outer endsof shafts H,`the inner ends having pinions, i, on them, which gear into a whcel, I,
,-ontheshaft B, On the upper end of the shaft` B there is fitted a sweep, J, to which the horse is attached for f"rotating the shaftand operating all the parts of the machine. Qn the lowerpart o't` the shaft B, below the bottom of the mud-mill, therev'is securcd,a wheel,.K, into whichthe pinionsL 'of four shafts, M, gear, which coin eide inp'osition with the shafts H above the mud-mill.V On the ou'tei` 'endef cach 'shaft M there is-a crank, N, and these crankshave each a pin, j, on their lower ends, said pins passing through oblong slots,k, in arms O, the upper endsfof which are pivoted to slides P, which wo'rk on the upper 'surfaces of beds Q, the moulds .R being placed on the latter. These beds. extend the whole width of the box A, underneath the press-boxes C, 'se shown clearly in'iigs. land-2. The moulds Rare'of the usual rectangular form, but arenot provided-with any permanent or fixed bottoms, but have loose ones, I, which may be raised within the moulds. On thc shafts M there are placed \vipers," S, one -on eachshaft, and these wipers, as the shafts M rotate, strikeA against levers T, which tliroiv upward, through'openihgs in the beds Q, vertical bars'U, the upper surfaces of which are equal, or nearly equal,"inare.nto the bottoms Z of the' moulds, The slidesP have each a weight, Y, attached by'a cord, m, and thesehcords' pass .over pulleys n. The moulds are placed on the beds Q, front 'of the slides P,`and the empty moulds R are'placed on the bedsin front of the slides,'the loose bottoms l being ittedin the moulds. lhe temperedclay is forced through .the openings d into the press-boxes C, bythe rotation of the scrapers c, and the plungers F are forced down by the cams Il, and press the clay into the monlds R, end whn the plungers Fare fully down, tho empty moulds B. are shoved underneath-'the press-boxes C,.and the lled moulds shoved out from underneath them by the slides P, which are operated at the proper time by the pins j of the cranks N, acting against the ends of the slots kin the arms O, the weight'rV drawing the slides P back as soon as thecra'nks N arrive at thepointiu their revolutions which admits of it.` The filled moulds'wR are forced from underneath the press-boxes directly-over thebars U, and the latter are raised eachv tiniela filled m'onldis moved over them by the action of the wipers S, on thele'vers T, the barsU,fas they rise, forcing the pressed clay or brick out from the mould R with the bottom l, and the brick is carried on the bottomto the place where it is to be stacked to be dried for the kiln, the bottoms admittingof 'the bricks being carried Withoutk danger of being diegured or injured in any way.
The derice is extremely simple, and will operate well, foar plungers being operated simultaneously, and the necessary movement of the several parts being obtained with a continuous rotar'y motion of the shaft We claim as new, and desire to vsecure by Letters Patent- 1. Operating the moulds R, that is to say, feeding the Bmptyoues underneath the press-boxes C, andshoving the lled ones out from underneath the sameby means,4 of the slides P, .having weights V attached, and connected to the cranks N of the shafts M by means of the crank-pins j and slotted arms O, all arranged substantially as shown and described. v
2. .The bars U,for discharging the bricks from the moulds, operated by the levers T a'nd wipers S, from the shafts M, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set lforth.
'3. The application of e press-box, C, to each side of the box of the mud-mill, in combination' withv theV four shafts H', operated from the inurl-mill-shsftB, andthe c ams h for operating theplunge'rs F', all arranged substantially as shown and described.
