Description

NPETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHiR; WASHINGTON. D' c.

ALFRED A. TORPEY, OF CHICAGQ'ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 81,560, dated 'August 25, 1868.
IMPROVED BRICK-PRESS.
vfitti .rgerte 'trama tn` it tten Eaters @anni mit making artt `nf the 'tamil To WHoM 1r MAY ooNonRN: i
p Be it known that `I, ALFREDA. TonPEY,-ot` Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois,- have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brick-Machines; and I do declare that the'following'is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being4 had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of 'this'speciication.
' Figure 1 is a side view.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view from :a2 to zr Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view from :1: to x.
Like letters indicate like parts in each figure.
'l'he nature of this invention consists `in constructing an apparatus for the same from the earth, the machine being automatic in its operation.
The earth, after having been properlyprepared, ispassed into suitablemoulds, and soon as filled a plate passes over and remains above the moulds. The bottoms of the moulds are the faces Aci' movable plungersvhich may be elevated to the proper distances to press the clay or earth. Soon as pressed, the top sliding plate is l removed. The pluugers are tleu elevated even with the top of the moulds, in position for the sliding plate, in' its return-motion, to move od the brick after being moulded, ready to be dried. The moulds and plates are made in duplicate, and operated in connection with 'each other, that one set may be filling while the other is pressing, the whole being operated by suitable cams, shafts, levers, Snc., as hereinafter described.
A represents the frame of themachiue. B are two parallel shafts, rotating in suitable boxes attached to the sills of the frame, and connected by gear-wheels, C, firmly secured to the outer end ofthe shafts ]3, givim.r motion to each other, which motion is obtained, by belt or otherwise, from any rotary power. v
Cams D and are rigidly secured upon shafts B, and are in shape to give the necessary motion to plungers H, which are secured at their lower ends. to a parallel bar, said bar being provided with pallets, 2, resting upon cams D and E, raising and depressing plungers H. Cam F, firmly secured at or near the outer end of' shafts B2, the face of which operates against pallet 4, giving a corresponding reciprocating motion to slide-bar Q, thereby transmitting thc required motion to upper slide, covering-plates .T and box K, through the agency of arms P and O, wrist 5,. rock-shaf`t N, and connecting-rods L. I
The red-line tracing, in iig. 1, 'shows the shape ot' inside cams D and E.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
The prepared clay or earth is placed in box K, and motion given to wheels C and shafts B, by any convenient power. The earth, passing into the left-hand'moulds, is pressed and raised up, during which operation the right-hand boxes are filled. Thecontinuc'd motion then removes the pressed bricks from over their respective moulds, and presses and raises up those in the opposite set, while the first are again being filled.
i Wheels C, in their motion, as indicated by arrows,'an`d in opposite position of cams D and E on shafts B, secure alternate motion of the plungers, pressing the bricks in one set while the other set is being raised from the moulds, during whichoperation box K'and'sliding platesJ are at rest, the plates forming the covers or tops of the moulds while the other set are filling, after which process outside cam F operates, asbefore described, upon pallet 4, slide-barJQ, arms 0 and P, rock-shaft N, and connecting-rod L moving bricks already pressed, covering the opposite moulds, which are filled, and opening moulds, preparatory to filling of the one side, while `the other isbeing pressed, alternately, the whole forming a convenient device'for the purposes speoiiied.
I do not claim separately any of the within-described parts; but4 What I` do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi- The'employment or use of the cams D, E, und F, pallets 4, slide-bnr Q, arms O and P, rock-shaft N, when combined with plates J', connecting-rods L, and box K, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
ALFRED A. TORPEY.
