Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES LEWIS, OF WELLINGTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO NELSON BACON.
IMPROVED PRESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5 1,732, dated December 2b, 1865.
To all lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES LEWIs, of the town of Wellington, county of Lorain, and
State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Press for Pressing Various Substances; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nat-ure ot' my invention consists in so constructing and arranging the different parts of a press that the substance to be pressed is acted upon and pressed by its own weight.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The frame A is constructed of any suitable materials and ot` sufcient strength for the purpose intended. The parts or upright portion of the frame are double, with a spacebetween them suciently wide to allow the pressing-levers C C, the sliding beam B, and the governing-lever G to slide upand down, and also to guide them in their motion.
B is the sliding beam supporting the platform I'.
G C are the pressing-levers, made fast to the head-piece H, and resting on the pin I in the frame.
D D are ties or rods connecting the pressing-levers C C with the sliding beam B.
F is the lifting-rod, attached to the presshead at one end and to the end of the governng-lever G at the other end.
G is the governing-lever, with itsfulcrum at z I is the platform resting on the sliding beam B, and E represen ts the su bstance to be pressed. O is a button to hold up the lever when it is raised for the purpose ot' removing the substance pressed.
The operation ot' thc press will be at once understood from the drawing. The fulcrum ofthe pressing-leversO C being at t', or at the pointof attachment to the connecting-ties D D, the power ofthe press with a given weight or substance to be pressed will be as the length of the short end of the lever is to the long end. The fulcrum or position of the ties D D may be moved upon the pressing-levers, as seen in the drawing, thus increasing or diminishing the power otthe lever, as circumstances may require.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my press, what l claim as 4my invention, and desire to secure by'Let-ters Patent, is
The combination ot the pressing-levers C O, the connectingties D D, the head-piece H, and the governing-lever G with the frame A and the sliding beam B, when constructed and arranged substantiallyas described, and as specitied, for the purposes set forth.
