To all whom it may concern: I
Be ityknown that I, Hanny M. PFLAGER, a citizen of the United States, residing' at St, Louis, in the State 4 n U of Missouri, have lnvented a new and useul lmprovement in Car-Underframes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the underframe of a railroad car, and has for its object to produce a metallic underi'rame in which the body-holsters are connected rigidly to each other by middle longitudinal beams, and to the side and ond sills respectively, by diagonalmembers wr braces, all in the same horizontal plane, for enabling 'he stress oi the drait-gear applied directly to the body? holsters at their middle portion, to be transmitted thereby to the best advantage through the said beams and sills, and for transmitting any stress or shock coming immediately on the center part or ends oi the end sills, to the body-bolsters at their junction with the said beams, or maximum resisting part oi' thel underframe.

- angle barsml being arranged side by side, as seen particularly in Fig. 3, andcoperating with the top and iottom members 14, and l5, of` the needle-beams h the latter are adapted-to be loaded at the endsi'and supported in the' middle, or vice versa, according to whether the side'or center sills are loaded excessively; that is to say, whenloaded at the ends the members 13, i4, will be in compression, and conversely.
By the application of. draft-gear without followerplates such as that described in the said patent, directly to the body-bolsters a, the middle longitudinal beams b, which in the ordinary car construction are comparatively close together, due to the use and limitation in length of the follower-plates for the ordinary draft-gear, can be spaced wider apart and the load thereon and on the side longitudinal sills more equally distributed. Moreover, any stress on the end sills f and endwise on the side longitudinal sills d is concentratedA and transmitted to thc body-bolsteis attheir junction with the middle longitudinal beams b, or along| the line ol maidmum resistance of the undermme. What l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is.
1. A metallic'under-frame for a. railroad car, comprising two side sills, two end sills, two body-holsters fixed at their ends to the side sills, and having suitable draft- 'gear Vapplied to the central portion thereof respectively,
the said members converging 'from the body-bolster andy fixed at their other end to the corresponding end sill at Y its middle portion, all the said parts beingl arranged in the same horizontal plane, substantially as described and foi'lthepurpose set forth.
2. A metallic under-frame for a railroad car, comprising two side sills two cud sills, two body-holsters fined at their ends to the side sills, and huvi'ng'a suitable draft- ;car applied ttr the central portion thereof respectively, two middle longitudinal beams connecting the bodybolsters to each other, one on each side of the longitudinal center of the car, and spaced pai't an equal distance, or -therenhout, from each other and from the side sills, two members iixed at one end to each lbody-bolster at the junction therewith of the said beams, and converging therefrom and fixed at their'othei' end to the corresponding en d sill at its middle portion, and two diagonally arranged braces fixed at one end to each body-bolster atv `the junction therewith of the said vbeams, and dt their other end tol-thel said sills, stt the junction, or .there-- about, ofthe said 'sills with each other, all' tbe'fslfii4 parts being arranged in 'the same horizontal plane, or
