Description

No. 863,790. PATENTED AUG. 20, 1907.
I W. DIXON.
POLlSHIlTG: BRUSH.
APPLIOATION'IILED DEO.16,1906.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM DIXON, OF NEWARK, NEW
JERSEY.
POLISHING-B RUSH.
Application filed December 15, 1905- To all-whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DIXON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishing-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to polishing brushes of the rotary type and has for its object to provide a construction in which the bristles are held in a very secure and permanent manner.
With this end in view, the invention consists in a polishing brush which embodies the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described-and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side-elevation of a polishing brush constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section on line 2, 2, Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a side-elevation of one of the side-plates, Fig. f is a transverse section on line 4, 4, Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is a side-elevation of one of the plates constituting the core about which the bristles are doubled, Fig. 6 section on line (3, 6, Fig. 5, Fig. 7 is a transverse section through the core showing the plates constituting said core in their normal position, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the thimble upon which the brush is mounted, the upset end of said thimble being indicated by dotted lines. 7
In the drawings a, a denote the dish-shaped sideplates of the improved polishing brush. These plates are preferably made of sheet-steel, and each is provided with a central opening a through which passes a sleeveshaped thimble b. The plates a are provided at their circumferences with sharp inwardly-extending edges (1 which serve to bite into the circular body (Z of bristles, said body being formed by doubling a number of bris tles about an annular core which is located between the two side-plates. This core is formed of two annular plates 0 having slightly bent-up inner rims as shown in Figs. 6 and '7. Said plates are made of spring-metal and their outer portions, when said plates are in normal position, being placed face to face, as shown in Fig. 7, diverge outwardly, as shown. However, when the bristles d are doubled about the core constituted by said plates and the dished side-plates a are pressed towards each other, the diverging outer portions of the annular plates 0 are pressed into parallelism, as shown in Fig. 2, in which position they exert a spring action laterally in opposite directions, that is to say, in the direction of the side-plates a, and thereby firmly clamp the bristles Specification of Letters Patent.

against the inner faces of the latter. The dished plates a are held firmly together, in the position shown in Fig. 2, by the thimble b which passes through the central openings of said plates, as heretofore explained. Said thimble is passed through said openings when in the form shown in Fig. 8, after which it is bent up at its plain end to form a circumferential rib or shoulder b as shown in full lines in Fig. 2 and in dotted lines in Fig.8, so as to firmly unite the parts into a unitary structure.
By the pressure exerted by the spring core upon the bristles, whereby the latter are firmly clamped between the side-plates and said core, and by the biting of the sharp circumferential edges of the side-plates into the bristles, a construction is obtained by which the loosening and falling out of-the bristles is practically obviated. Furthermore, by this construction the bristles are so held that instead of having a tendency to project laterally and become enlarged at the circumference of the brush, they are made to converge slightly and intersect at their outer ends, so that the width of the brush at the circumference is approximately equal to or even less than the thickness of the body of the bristles at the point where the bristles leave the outer edge of the sideplates. This imparts to the brush great stiffness and resistance to the work during the polishing action and renders the brush very durable and eflicient in use.
The parts of the improved polishing brush may be assembled very readily by suitable machinery, so that brushes constructed in accordance with the invention may be turned out in large quantities and at a comparatively low price. After the assemblage of the parts and the upsetting of the plain end of the thimble, the un even outer ends of the bristles are trimmed, after which the brush is ready for use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a rotary polishing brush, the combination of an annular core having normally separated spring-portions, bristles doubled about said core, and side-plates inclosingsaid bristles and exerting pressure on said core, whereby said spring-portions thereof are pressed toward each other.
2. In a rotary polishing brush, in combination, a core comprising annular spring-plates placed face to face and normally having their outer portions diverging in outward direction, bristles doubled about said core, side-plates confining said bristles and exerting pressure on said core whereby said outer portions thereof are maintained in parallelism, and a thimble upon which said side-plates are secured.
A polishing brush comprising a central core formed of annular plates having inwardly diverging inner rims, a bruslrbody composed of bristles doubled about said core, dished side-plates having central openings, and a thimble passing through said openings in said dished plates and provided with upset ends for retaining said plates thereon.
4. A polishing brush comprising an annular core composed of two spring-plates having inwardly diverging rimportions, a brush-body formed of bristles doubled about said core and radiating therefrom, dished side-plates provided at their circumferences with inwardly-disposed edges biting into said bristles, and a thimble upon which said side-plates are secured.
5. A polishing brush comprising a thimble, side p1ates mounted thereon, and an annular core of springmetal about which said bristles are doubled, said core having diverging flanges compressed between said bristles.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my inventien, I have signed my nzune in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' WILLIAM DIXON.
