Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE..
GUSTAV HEINRICH RENDEL, OF FRANKFORT-ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY.
ROTATING BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent N o. 565,218, dated August 4, 1896. Application iiled July 9,1895. Serial No. 555Al6. (No model.)
To aZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, Gusrnv HEINRICH REN- DEL, a subject ot the Emperor of Germany, and aresident of Frankforteon-the-Main, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to that class of brushes which employ metallic bristles and are used for cleaning and burnishing metal castings and the like; and it consists of a certain novel arrangement of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and speciiieally pointed out in the claims.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in elevation of a rotary brush divided into four sections to show the diiierent stages in construction of the brush. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line a: ce, Fig. 1, and showing one form of brush; and Fig. is also a transverse section similar to Fig. 2, but showing a modifica-tion.
In the said drawings, N represents the hub, having formed integral with it at one end the flange N" and having the clamping-nut N working on its other end.
F represents the circular body portion of the brush, which is formed in two parts, as shown, and provided on its periphery with the grooved portion F', in which the loop end of the bristles B iits. The bristles in the present instant are formed of metal, and each bristle is bent so as to use both ends and to form a loop B', although a single bristle may be used, in which case it isheld at its root end by any suit. ble means.
From the above arrangement it will be seen that the body portion F is made adj ustable,`
so as to accommodate different widths of loops, and when they are forced together between the clamping-disks P by the nut N' on the hub they bind upon the loop. The disks P are mounted on the hub, as shown, and they are formed near their outer periphery with the bulge portion P', provided on their interior surface with the serrations Q, which engage with the loop portion of the bristles and prevent any movement of the loop on the periphery of the body.
g represents extension-disks secured to the disks P by means of screws g. These .disks are merely to prevent any lateral movement of the bristles, and when the bristles become worn they are removed ,or shorter supports substituted, as shown on the left side of Fig. 3.
R represents a lling-piece which is placed in the loop 'for the purpose of holding the bristles firmly in the groove of the body. This may be of any construction and of any shapein cross-section, as, for instance, round, as shown in Fig. 2, or square, as shown in Fig. 3. The bristles are further secured by means of the rivets n n, which pass through the disks IJ I and the loop of the bristles.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. In a brush of substantially the character specified, the combination of a hub, a clamping-nut thereon, a grooved body portion on said hub and formed in two parts and adapted to support the loop end of the bristles, the bristles having a loop and a filling-piece litting in the loop, a pair of pressingdisks carried by said hub and adapted to press against the body portion and the bristles, and a pair of extension-disks carried by the pressingdisks and arranged to prevent lateral movement of the ends of the bristles, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a brush of substantiallythe character specified, the combination of the hub, a body portion carried by said hub and having a grooved periphery for supporting the loop end of the bristles, the bristles having a loop and a filling-piece fitting in the loop, a pair of pressingsdisks carried by the hub and bearing against the body portion, said disks being provided with a bulged portion serrated on its inner face and bearing against the bristles, and a pair of extension-disks secured to and bearing against the ends of the bristles to prevent lateral movement thereof, substantially as set forth.
