UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KARL S. BRECKENRIDGE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
FRICTION-TOP CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1907.
Application filed larch 11,1907- Serial No. 361,693.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL S. BRECKENRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Friction-Top Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to friction top cans;
The object of my invention is to provide a friction top can with a simple and eflicient means for holding circulars, samples advertisements, directions and other matters within the recess or cavity of the friction cover which fits within the depressed annular top of the can, so that the recess or cavity of the cover may be utilized.
It consists in providing the cover with one or more holding strips of sheet metal, the ends of which are .crimped or tucked under the annular pry-off rim of the cover. The holding strips are preferably about one half inch in width and preferably two in number. To lock the holding strips in place, the pry-off rim of the cover is preferably slightly depressed at the points where the holding strips are applied.
In the 'accornpanying drawing iorminga part of this specification, Figure 1 is aplan view of a friction top can embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on lines 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail section of the cover.
In the drawing, A represents the body oi the can, B its annular top, C its bottom head and D th 'e frictioncover. The annular top B has the customary depression 1; therein and annular depending friction seat wall b. D is the recessed or dish shaped friction coverhaving the customary annular friction seat wall d tightly fitting and engaging the'iriction seat wall 6 of the annular top B. The friction cover D has the customary marginal pry-off rim d reinforced by an inwardly and downwardly turned fold d F F are hlolding strips preferably of sheet metal, extendingdiametrically across the cover B, and having at each end lips 1. A friction top can having a recessed or dish shaped friction cover provided with an outwardly projecting annular pry-0E rim and furnished with crossing holding strips extending across the same and secured at their ends to the pry-01f rim of the cover, substantially as 2. In a friction top can a recessed or dish shaped friction cover having an outwardly projecting annular pryoflf rim furnished with a reinforcing fold and provided with a holding strip extending across the siime and se cured at its ends to"its rim, substantially as specified.
3. In av friction top can, the combination with a recessed friction cover having a pry-oh? rim, of a holding strip for retaining articles within the recess or cavity of the cover, said holding strip having its. ends turned under the pry-off rim of the cover,'substantially as specified.
4. In a friction top can, the combination with a recessed cover having a marginal rim, of a holding strip extending across the cover andhavlng its ends clenched under the rim of the cover, substantially as specified.
