Description

.. No. 862,021. PATENTED JULY-a0, 19.07.;
N. S'GHMIT. WASHING MACHINE BOTTOM.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 21, 1906.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NICHOLAS SCHMIT, OF DELPHOS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN T. HORINE, OF DELPHOS, OHIO.
WASHING-MACHINE BOTTOM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed March 21, 1956- Serial No. 807,219-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS Sonnrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delphos, in the county of Allen, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machine Bottoms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a washing machine bottom, and particularly to a structure of that character having a conical raised central portion.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of bottom adapted for application to a tub of wood or other suitable material, from which bottom a central ribbed cone arises, and at its base merges into a ribbed horizontal flange provided at each end of its ribs with a gutter portion.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing:-Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention; Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section thereof; Fig. 3 is a detail top plan; Fig. 4 is a section on line 44, Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a vertical section showing the bottom applied to a washing machine.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts throughout'the several views of the drawing.
The bottom or base plate 1 is preferably of circular configuration, as shown, and is provided at its center with a conical portion 2 formed with ribs 3 radiating downwardly from the apex of the cone, and increasing in width toward the bottom thereof. The series of these ribs is continuous about the cone and they are preferably formed in the body of the metal of the bottom so as to extend therethrough, thus facilitating the manufacture of the invention, and also rendering the bottom lighter in weight with the maximum. strength These ribs 3 are of angular configuration in bottom flange 1, the horizontally disposed ribs 5 are provided, which are preferably of curved configuration, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These ribs are spaced from the edge of the flange so as to leave a gutter portion 6 at that point, and this edge is adapted to enter the staves or side walls of the tub 7 to which the bottom is applied, as shown in Fig. 5. It will also be seen that the horizontally disposed ribs upon the flange are in alternation with the ribs of the cone, and being greater in number comprise substantially two of the flange ribs between the apex of the angle of each of the cone ribs, as shown in Fig. 3, which gives the necessary rubbing or knuckle action upon the bottom of the tub, into contact with which the body of clothes to be washed rests.
This invention is adapted for application to any character of washing machine, and is particularly intended for use with a rotary agitator 8, as shown in Fig. 5, which is provided with pins 9 of different lengths to cooperate respectively with the cone ribs and base, While the operating handle 10 projects above the cover 11 applied to the tub in the usual manner.
The invention presents an integral cone bottom having a peculiar construction and arrangement of ribs hereinbefore described which produce a rubbing action upon the articles to be washed much more eflicient thanin the prior art, and prevents loosening or dis placement of attached ribs, as well as obviating sharp points or securing devices with which the clothes may be engaged or torn.
Having now described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A washing machine bottom comprising a central conical portion provided with a series of continuous straight angular ribs increasing downwardly in width, and a horizontally disposed flange provided with a continuous series of curved ribs separated from those of the cone by an annular plane surface.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
NICHOLAS SCHMIT.
