Description

PATENTED JULY 30, 1907.
0. RUHLIN.
TOY. AYPLIOATIOH Hum 33.16. 1907.
Wrmassas: INVENI'UR Pvr'rv.
CHARLES RUHLIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed February 15, 1907. Serial No. 3
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES RUHLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices of that class known as jointed figure toys, and the especial object of the improvements which form the subject matter of this application is to produce an amusing form of jointed toy of inexpensive construction, and in which the movable parts will simulate nature.
While I have shown my invention as applied to the figures of a donkey and clown, it is obvious that the same mechanical arrangement may be utilized with other forms of figures having pivotal parts or members.
In the accompanying drawing, I have shown my invention in elevation by full lines and dotted lines, the latter indicating the different positions taken by-the movable members when the toy is operated, and the full lines showing the parts at rest.
Referring to the details of the drawing 1 indicates the body portion of the donkey, the same consisting of two pieces of thin board or other suitable material of corresponding form and secured together in any convenient manner with a free space therebetween for the reception of the piece 9 forming the body of the rider and the pivoted members of the donkey.
2 represents the fore legs and 3 the hind legs of the figure which are in pairs, and are pivoted to the outer sides of the body.
4 represents the animals head which is pivoted between the body members 1.
5 represents the tail which is also pivoted between the body members.
The pivots 6 form the pivotal connections for the legs, head and tail respectively. v
7 represents a wire which is bent upon itself, passes through a hole formed therefor in the lower jaw portion of the head 4 and has its ends secured in holes 'in the knee portion of the fore legs 2. A similar wire 8 connects in the same manner the hind legs and the tail of the animal.
9 represents the body of the clown the lower portion of which is rigidly secured between the body members 1, and the upper part is supplied with a suitable head. The upper and lower arm members 10 of each arm are pivotally connected together by pivots 12, the upper members are connected with the body by pivot 11, and the hand portions of the lower'members are connected with the neck portion of the member 4, by pivot 13.
Secured to the top of the head of the clown is an elastic band or string 14; secured to the front edge or nose portion of the head 4, is a non-elastic but flexible string or cord 15, and a similar cord or string is secured to the tail member of the animal.
When the free ends of the cords l5 and 16, and the elastic 14 are gathered together and held by the operator as indicated, the weight of the animal and rider will stretch the elastic and cause the weight to be applied to the cords 15 and 16, which will pull upwardly upon the head and tail, and, through the wires 7 and 8, will cause an upward movement of the legs. By moving the'hand up and down, the repeated flexing and stretching of the elastic and cords resulting will cause the donkeys head, legs and tail to vibrate in a manner somewhat similar to the galloping movements of a live donkey.
If desired, a stop 17 may be secured between the body members at a point above the pivot of the tail and thus limit the upward movement of the tail. The movements however may be practically controlled through the movements of the hand holding the strings and elas tie and by adapting the latter to the weight of the device.
Upon the sides of the members 1 will be painted or otherwise indicated, parts corresponding to the legs of the clown and registering with the lines and edges of the part 9 appearing above the edges of the members 1,
and if desired, the feet of the rider may be formed integrally with the members 1, as indicated in the drawing.
I claim 1. A toy consisting of a body portion having upper and lower members pivoted to the opposite ends thereof, the upper and lower members at each end being connected to gether, an elastic band connected with the body portion, and flexible cords connected with the upper pivoted members respectively.
2. A toy consisting of a body portion having upper and lower members pivoted to the opposite ends thereof, and having a rigid central extension, means connecting together the upper and lower members at each end of the body portion, an elastic band connected with said central extension, and flexible cords connected with said upper pivoted members respectively.
8. A toy consisting of a body portion having upper and lower members pivoted at the opposite ends thereof, wires connecting together the upper and lower members at each end of the body portion, an elastic band connected with the said body portion, and flexible cords connected with the upper members respectively.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES RUHLIN.
