Description

PATENTBD JULYaO, 1907.
cn., wAsHmaToN, n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY KEY BELL, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
PLUMBING WASTE-PIPE.
Application filed June 17, 1904, Serial No. 212,982. Renewed January 23, 1907.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARYKEY BELL, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county oi Knox and State oi Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plumbing Waste-Pipes, of which the iollowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates particularly lto waste pipes leading from wash basins and kitchen sinks.
The object of the invention is to provide a waste pipe with means for intercepting solid matter passing downward from the basin or sink and to provide means for the convenient removal of such solid matter irom the pipe. Such solid matter may consist of mere refuse which should be intercepted to prevent the stoppage of the pipes further down, or it may consist oi articles of value, as small articles oi jewelry and diamonds and other valuable stones dislodged from their settings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a iront elevation of a portion oi a waste pipe embodying my improvement, the cap to the opening of said pipe having been removed; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation looking from the right as shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line, 3-3, oi Eig. 2.
In said drawings, l is the pipe. Its upper end may be joined directly to the basin or sink in the usual manner or said end may be joined to another section of pipe the upper end oi which is joined to the sink.
At any convenient point below the basin or sink, preferably above the S-orm water seal, 2, the intercepting device is located. This consists oi a diaphragm, 3, having perlorations or openings, 4, suiliciently numerous and large to permit the ready flow oi liquid Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 353.578.
through said diaphragm and yet small enough to prevent the passage of solid particles of objectionable size. Said diaphragm, oi course, is oi proper size and shape to completely fill the interior oi the pipe, The diaphragm shown in the drawings is made oi sheet metal.
Immediately above the diaphragm is located a short horizontal branch pipe, 5, through which access may be had to the space above said diaphragm for the purpose oi removing the solid matter lodging thereon. A suitable closing device, (i, is applied to the end oi said branch. In the drawings, said closing device is a circular flanged cap interiorly threaded to conform to interior screw threads on the branch pipe. Said closing device may be removed as often as desired, when it is thought that there is an accumulation oi refuse or when any article of value has gone down the pipe.
It will be understood that the details o construction may be more or less varied without departing from the principle and spirit of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
As an article of manufacture, a plumbers trap comprising a one-piece waste pipe of S-form and substantially uniform diameter and havingr a tubular, horizontal branch located a little above the seal portion of said pipe, a screwthreaded cap closing said branch, and a horizontal, circular, perforated, sheet-metal diaphragm extending entirely across the interior of said pipe and in the same horizontal plane with the lowest portion of said branch, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name, in pres ence of two Witnesses, this third day of June, in the year one thousand nine hundred and four.
MARY KEY BELL.
