UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. GOLES, OE CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ULYSSES A. BRETING, OF CANTON, OHIO.
DRAIN-PIPE-FLUSHING ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 1910.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. GOLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drain-Pipe-Flushing Attachments, of which the following is a speciication.
The invention relates to an attachment for drain pipe screens by means of which the drain pipe can be flushed by the use of ordinary hose; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple device, without detachable parts, which can be readily connected with the drain pipe screen, and to which the hose can be connected in the usual manner.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section illustrating the attachment in use; Fig. 2, a detached perspective view of the screen plate; and Fig. 3, a detached perspective view of t-he flushing attachment showing a plug adjacent thereto.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.
The enlarged opening 1 of the drain pipe 2 leading from the bottom 3 of a kitchen sink or other bowl or basin, is frequently closed with a disk-like screen plate, having its peripheral portion 4 countersunk in the rim portion 5 of the opening 6 in the sink bottom, wherein the plate is secured as by the bolts 7. For the purposes of the present invention, the middle portion of the screen plate is somewhat depressed below the peripheral portion 4, thus forming a shallow cup or socket, the cylindric sides 9 of which are provided with the internal screw thread 10 and the bottom 8 of which is perforated.
The flushing attachment is composed of the disk body 11 having the depending peripheral flange 12 which is provided with the external screw thread 13 corresponding to the internal thread of the screen plate; and the central nipple 1A which is preferably provided with the internal screw thread 15 adapted to receive the ordinary externallythreaded nipple 16 of thehose 17.
In ,use, the peripheral flange of the flushing attachment is screwed into the socket of the screen plate, a ring washer 18 having been preferably inserted to seal the joint between the edge of the flange and the bottom of the socket, after which the hose is connected to the nipple of the attachment, whereupon the drain pipe can be flushed by means of a force pump, not shown, oli the pressure of the ordinary water supp It is evident that the simplicity of the attachment permits its use by unskilled persons, that it has no parts liable to become detached and lost, and that its size can be adapted to the use of the ordinary fruit jar packing ring usually available in all households; and that the screen plate adapted for its use is without any undesirable projecting parts, while the cup-like depression of its socket facilitates the collection and removal of such refuse as does not pass through the perforations therein. The screw plug 19 may be provided to close the nipple opening of the attachment, when it is desired to completely close the drain pipe, as for retaining water in the sink, or for fiushing a communieating branch of the drain pipe, but otherwise the plug is not a necessary feature of the device.
I claim:
1. In combination, a drain pipe screen plate with a socket in its middle portion having a pervious bottom and an internal screw thread in its sides, and a flushing attachment including a disk portion with a central nipple adapted for a hose connection and a depending peripheral flange having an external screw thread corresponding to the socket thread.
2. In combination, a drainpipe screen plate with a socket in its middle portion having a pervious bottom, and a flushing attachment adapted to be secured in the socket around the pervious bottom and having a central opening adapted for a hose connection.
WILLIAM A. GOLES. Witnesses:
