Description

No. 861,459. PATBNTED JULY 30,1907. H. GROSS.

APPLICATION FILED MAY 9, 1906.

HENRY GROSS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TELEPHONE ATTACHIVIENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed `May 9,1906. Serial No. 315,928.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Gnoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Telephone Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments to telephones and more particularly to mouth pieces for telephones, and the principal object of the same is to provide means for closing the mouth piece temporarily during an interview to prevent the party at the other end of the wire from hearing conversation which may take place during the suspension of the interview.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and accompanying same, Figure l is a side view of the upper part of the portable telephone transmitter partly in section and provided with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view but with the parts occupying a different position.
In the threaded opening 5 in the front plate 6 of the transmitter wherein the usual mouth piece is secured, a threaded tube or hub '7, Which is part of a substantially rectangular frame 8, is screwed. This frame 8 is provided on its front face with lips 9 around its edge and preferably on the upper and lower sides, the said Alips forming grooves in which plays a plate l0 also having a perforation or opening Il concentric with the mouth piece l2 which is secured to said plate. The device may be constructed of hard rubber such as is usually employed in the construction of the parts ot telephone instruments, or if found desirable may be made of metal and suitably ornamented. As shown in Fig. 2 the device is in position for use and it is possible for any one to speak into the transmitter without interference, but in Fig. 3 I have shown the slide l0 shifted to one side of the frame 8 so that the opening of the transmitter is closed by one end of the plate and the mouth piece l2 is also obstructed by one end of the frame 9, so that in case the person using the transmitter desires to temporarily suspend his conversation and Wishes to prevent the party at the other end of the wire from hearing what conversation might take place during the said suspension of conversation it is only necessary for the talker to slide the mouth piece to the position shown in Fig. 3, and when he desires to resume his talk he slides it to the position shown in Fig. 2 when there is no obstruction of the transmitter.
It is obvious that minor modifications may be made in the construction of the device without departing from the essential features as shown and above dcscribed.
I-Iaving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The herein described attachment for telephone mouth pieces comprising a trame attached to the transmitter by a threaded connection with the edge of the central opening of the said transmitter and provided with guide lips and an intermediate groove, a mouth piece connected to a slide mounted to move in said groove, said slide having an opening in line with the month piece, and an iinperforate portion adapted to cover `the central opening in the transmit ter, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY GROSS.
Witnesses JAMES F. DUHAMEL, M. W. CLINTON.
