To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that ll, CHARLES EDWARD J oNEs,a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Telephone Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tele hones, particularly to attachments there or, and has for its object the provision of a device interposed between the transmitterand mouth piece and embodying a shutter which is operable to cover or uncover the opening in the mouth piece and which is for the purpose of excluding from the transmitter objectionable noises such as are present in factories, work-shops, and other places, it being well known that these noises are transmitted to the party at the other end of the line and cause confusion and annoyance.

An important object is the provision of a device of this character which may be attached to a telephone without making any alterations therein and which is so constructed that it is normally spring-pressed into such position as to permit the passage of sound into the transmltter while capable of being very quickly adjusted toshut ofi sound.

An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efiicient in use,.durable in service, and a eneral improvement in the art.

Vith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention-consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illus trated in the accompanying drawings in which--' Figure 1 is a side elevation of a telephone equipped with my device,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates the t-ransmit ter of a telephone, and B designates the mouth piece thereof My device is adapted for interposition between the transmitter and mouth piece and comprises a cylindrical casing 10 constructed of any desired size and of any suitable material, and of any number of parts necessary, though in the drawings I have shown it as formed in ing and Specification of Letters Patent. The section 12 is formed centrally with an internally threaded extension 14 within which the mouth piece B is screwed. In this Way my device is firmly associated with the telephone.

Located within the casing 10 is a segmental shaped shutter 15 pivoted at 16 and provided with an elongated extension 17 movable through a slot 18 in one side of the easprovided at its end with a pendant chain 19 serving as a handle. The shutter is formed with a rounded hole 20 adapted to register with the opening leading into the transmitter and the shutter is engaged: by'a leaf-spring 21 which normally holds it in such position that the hole 20 registers with the opening in the transmitter and permits the passage of sound. When it is desired to cut off the sound entering the transmitter, as for instance when one is listening to or receiving a message in a noisy place, it is merely necessary that the operator pull downwardly upon the chain 19 which Wlll move the shutter so as to cover the opening in the transmitter. It will thus be seen that objectionable noises will not be heard by the other party telephoning.

From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply con.- structed and efficient device which is easy to install and which will render a transmitter sound-proof and consequently not only prevent undesired noises or remarks being heard by the party at the otherend of the line but will also make the message received.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

A telephone attachment comprising a casing formed of detachably connected sections, one section being formed with an outwardly extending central flange externally threaded for engagement within the threaded hole of a telephone transmitter and the other section being formed with a central internally threaded hole for engagement therein of the threaded end of the t lephone mouth piece, a shutter pivoted within said casing and including a relatively large platedike head portion and a relatively long and narrow extension constituting a handle, the sideof the casing being formed with a slot through which said handle extension extends, said shutter being formed at one end of the head portion with a hole adapted to register with the hole encircled by said flange, and a leaf spring secured within the casing and engaging said head portion for normally holding the shutter with the hole therein registering with the hole in the 0 transmitter.
